🚪🔑 Aluminium vs. Alumaco: Are They the Same Thing?
If you’ve ever gone to buy windows or doors, you’ve probably heard people say Aluminium and Alumaco. They sound alike, but they don’t actually mean the same thing. Let me explain 👇
🔹 Aluminium
Aluminium is the real name of the metal (symbol Al). It’s lightweight, durable, and resistant to rust, making it perfect for windows, doors, and roofing.
Now here’s the interesting part—
• In Nigeria, the UK, and most parts of the world, it’s spelt aluminium.
• In America and Canada, it’s spelt aluminium.
Why the difference? 🤔
• Back in 1808, a scientist named Sir Humphry Davy first called it alumium, then aluminium.
• Later, British scientists decided on aluminium to match other metals like sodium and potassium.
• The U.S. stuck with aluminium, while the rest of the world kept aluminium.
• Today, both are correct depending on where you are 🌍.
🔹 Alumaco
Here’s where the confusion comes in…
Alumaco is not the name of the metal.
It’s actually a brand name. In Nigeria, one of the earliest and biggest suppliers of aluminium products was a company called ALUMACO. They became so popular that people started calling every aluminium window an “Alumaco window,” even if it wasn’t made by that company.
It’s the same way people say “Indomie” for any noodles, or “Coke” for any soft drink. The brand name became a household name.
🔹 So, Which One Should You Use?
• If you’re talking about the metal itself, the right word is aluminium (or aluminium if you’re in the U.S.).
• If you’re talking in Nigeria and someone says “Alumaco window,” they usually just mean an aluminium window.
