Some people think all toilet doors are the same. Until it’s time to buy one! 😂

The funny thing about building a house is that you can spend so much money on roofing, windows, tiles and POP, only to reach the toilet door stage and start wondering, “Which one should I even buy?”

But the truth is, you have options.

We have PVC toilet doors, steel toilet doors, aluminium toilet doors with waterproof boards, and even cubicle glass doors for certain bathroom and toilet designs.

Now, let me tell you something I find interesting about aluminium toilet doors.

They are among the affordable options many people consider, especially the ones made with waterproof boards. But not all of them are the same.

The materials, finishing, designs and overall quality can differ.

Two doors may look almost alike from a distance, but the quality of the materials used to make them may tell a different story.

That’s why I always advise people to consider their budget, the design they want and the quality of the door before making a choice.

You don't have to spend unnecessarily to get something suitable for your building. Just make sure you understand what you're paying for.

The type you're seeing in this picture is one of the popular aluminium toilet door options around Benin City and its environs.

We have them available at our office, and we offer competitive prices for both individual and bulk purchases without compromising our quality standards.

Now, let me ask you something. 👇

If you were choosing a toilet door for your house today, which would you prefer: PVC, steel or aluminium with waterproof board?

Let's hear your choice in the comments. No fighting o! 😂

Sometimes, the way you start something can matter more than how big you start it.

Let me tell you about a brother who wanted to start a building materials business here in Benin City.

He saved money for some months. Family members supported him financially. Some of his friends also contributed, and before long, the money he had for the business had grown into good capital.

He didn't want to start small.

So before starting, he went for a 6-month training.

But after about 3 months, he felt he had already known everything.

Omo.

He left his Oga before completing the training.

But that wasn't even the biggest problem.

His Oga was already doing very well, with up to 5 outlets in strategic locations.

This brother took some of his Oga's goods and also started approaching some of his Oga's customers.

Then he rented his own shop in a strategic location.

He spent serious money maintaining the place. The shop looked premium.

He bought some goods from the same supplier his Oga was using, branded his own business and started selling.

People started coming.

Even some of the customers he had taken from his Oga started patronising him.

After one year, according to the story, things were going well.

His Oga eventually noticed what was happening, but he stayed calm.

Then, after about 2 years and 6 months, things started changing.

Some customers stopped coming.

Even some of the customers he had taken from his Oga stopped coming.

Six months later, his rent was due.

He couldn't renew it.

After another two months, landlord wahala started and he was given 3 months' quit notice.

Eventually, he had to sell the remaining goods as distress sales to settle the landlord.

The business closed.

And he went back to doing bus conductor work.

Back to square one.

I don't know everything that happened behind the scenes, and I'm not here to say every business failure is karma.

But there is one lesson I can't ignore.

Don't destroy the person who taught you just because you are ready to start your own.

If your apprenticeship is not complete, don't just run away because you think you now know everything.

And don't steal your Oga's goods or deliberately take his customers

Being busy all year doesn't automatically mean you made progress.

I was thinking about this recently.

In less than 68 days, we will be saying goodbye to 2026.

And honestly, one question I think we should all ask ourselves is:

“What did I actually achieve this year?”

Not “How busy was I?”

Because those two things are not the same.

You can be busy from morning till night and still discover that you were only busy for busy sake.

Running around.

Doing one thing after another.

Solving today's problem and moving to the next one.

But at the end of the year, when you sit down quietly, you ask yourself:

“What really changed?”

This year, some people built houses.

Some couldn't.

Some got married.

Some didn't.

Some started businesses.

Some tried and failed.

Some got lucky on their first attempt.

Some are still trying to figure things out.

And that is life.

We don't all arrive at the same place at the same time.

Even in business, I've learnt that activity alone is not enough. You need to be able to look back and see what your effort produced.

So as we gradually approach the end of 2026, maybe take some time and check yourself.

What did you start?

What did you finish?

What did you learn?

What moved forward because you made the decision to act?

And if you look back and feel like you didn't achieve much this year, don't beat yourself up.

If you didn't spend a huge amount of money on hospital bills, if you are healthy enough to wake up and continue your journey, be grateful for the gift of life.

You still have time.

Set one realistic goal.

Then use the remaining days of 2026 to work towards it.

Don't just be busy.

Make sure your busy is taking you somewhere. 🙏🏽

I used to blame some customers when they refused to go for quality materials. Until I started seeing something that changed my mind.

Sometimes, a customer will ask questions upon questions about the materials you want to use.

They will compare quotations.

They will negotiate.

They may even ask, “How sure are you that na this material you go use?”

Before, I used to think some of them were just trying to make the job unnecessarily cheap.

But as time went on, I started understanding them better.

I have heard stories where a workman tells a customer:

“Mama, na quality materials I wan use for you na make the price high.”

The customer pays.

But somewhere along the line, the person uses something inferior instead.

Omo.

That one pains me.

Because the customer didn't just pay for the work. They paid believing they were getting what was promised.

And this is one reason I no longer blame customers for asking plenty questions or negotiating.

Nobody wants to be cheated.

Nobody wants to spend their hard-earned money and later discover that what they paid for wasn't what they got.

At the same time, there is something else customers should understand.

Not every quotation you receive will be the same.

One workman may charge higher than another, and it doesn't automatically mean one person is trying to cheat you.

Our knowledge, experience, workmanship and level of awareness are not the same.

And yes, an affordable quotation can still produce a good job.

But being the cheapest should not be the only thing you look at.

For me, the most important thing is to work with someone you can trust.

Someone who can tell you what he is using, why he is using it, and then actually use what was agreed.

Because at the end of the day, whether it is roofing, windows, doors or any other building work, trust is also part of the job.

And honestly, I understand customers who ask questions now.

Sometimes, those questions are not because they don't want to spend.

They just want to be sure they are getting what they are paying for.

OJ's Festival Of Joy Offers is still around the corner.

Sometimes, when you look at where you are today, you forget how rough the beginning was.

I just got home this evening, and something made me remember how OJ Aluminum Fabrication started in September 2023.

Almost nothing.

After my apprenticeship journey with my OGA ended, I started working as a sales boy. Omo, that period was not easy at all.

I was working really hard, doing almost everything I could, including things that were not even part of my job description.

But sometimes, you can put in so much effort and still feel like nobody sees it.

That period was really rough for me.

There were days I was tired. There were days I wondered how things would turn out.

But one thing I kept telling myself was:

“As far as there is life, there is hope.”

I refused to give up.

Looking back now, I can say that the struggle and stress of that period played a part in the birth of OJ Aluminum Fabrication.

Before OJ Aluminum Fabrication officially started, I had already done some jobs with some of my senior colleagues. Then in 2023, I got my first shop.

No big setup.

Just a shop, some banners and a few tools that an average workman could afford.

The funny part?

The picture attached to this post is one of my very first contracts.

I didn't even have all the tools I needed to deliver that job.

So I borrowed the tools/machine I needed.

And guess what?

The amount that particular machine was worth at that time was about four times my annual rent. 😂

Imagine.

But somehow, we got the job done.

Today, when I look at OJ Aluminum Fabrication, I see growth.

From almost zero tools to having our own tools and machines.

From just a shop and banners to having systems, a website and a team.

Three years may sound short, but only the person who was there at the beginning knows what those three years carried.

So, if you are currently in a rough season, don't be too quick to conclude that nothing is happening.

Some things simply take time.

Follow the process. Do your part. Be patient with life. And keep moving.

As far as there is life, there is hope.

One thing business has taught me is that not everybody can follow you into every season of your life.

Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons.

Sometimes, we don't even notice them until we are already in the middle of the situation.

Entrepreneurship is another school entirely.

When you are trying to keep a business alive, pay bills, satisfy customers, improve your work and still find your feet, you start seeing people and situations differently.

There are relationships you may need to create boundaries around.

Not because the person is bad.

Not because you suddenly hate them.

But because sometimes, if you don't protect your time, your money, your focus and your business, the business itself may suffer.

I have come to understand that as an entrepreneur, you cannot say yes to everybody.

You cannot attend to everything.

You cannot keep every relationship exactly the way it used to be.

Sometimes, you have to make difficult decisions.

That's why I always remember that saying:

“Business is war.”

Not the kind of war where you must destroy somebody.

But the kind where everybody is working hard for their own share of the market.

While one person is sleeping, another person is learning something new.

One person is improving their service.

Another is looking for better ways to reach customers.

Another is studying what customers really want.

There is plenty of work happening behind the scenes that nobody sees.

Even in aluminium fabrication, people mostly see the finished window, door, roof or water collector.

They don't always see the learning, planning, measurements, corrections, customer conversations, site challenges and long hours that come before that finished work.

That underground work is what slowly separates one person from another.

So these days, I try not to take every change personally.

Some relationships will change.

Some people will leave.

Some people will stay.

And sometimes, you simply have to protect what you are building while still treating people with respect.

Entrepreneurship is teaching me that growing a business is not only about making money. It is also about learning people, learning yourself and knowing what deserves your energy.

I am still learning.

And I believe many entrepreneurs can relate to this.

What is one lesson business has taught you that you never expected?
