Fasteners may be small components, but in a mechanical seal they play a critical role in 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿, 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Set screws, dog point screws, drive screws, socket head cap screws and gland bolts each have a specific function — and using the correct fastener, material and torque is essential.

Reusing critical screws and bolts is generally not advisable. Previous tightening, thread wear, galling, corrosion, head damage or possible stretching can make preload less predictable.

Mechanical seal springs may be small, but they play a critical role in maintaining the initial closing force needed to keep the seal faces together.

In multiple-spring designs, the load is distributed around the circumference, helping the seal respond consistently to face wear and axial movement.

But the spring is only part of the force system. Reliable sealing depends on the balance between 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲, 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗱-𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲.

Material selection, corrosion resistance, correct compression, clean spring pockets and consistent spring condition are all equally important.

𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲.

Secondary sealing may not get the same attention as the seal faces, but it is just as important to overall mechanical seal reliability.

O-rings, gaskets, flexible graphite and PTFE-based seals each serve different purposes — from dynamic secondary sealing around seal faces to static sealing at sleeves, glands and equipment joints.

The key is not only choosing the right material. 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 all matter.

Too much squeeze, too little squeeze, sharp edges, trapped contamination or excessive clearance can all lead to leakage, extrusion, hang-up or premature failure.

𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲.

Lapping is important not only in 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, but also for 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 and 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘀.

Whether the seal face is newly manufactured or refurbished, the objective remains the same: to achieve the 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 needed for a stable sealing interface.

For refurbishment, lapping also comes with an added evaluation step — the existing seal faces must first be assessed to determine whether they are still suitable for 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗲 or whether 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 is the better option.

A good lapping process, supported by proper inspection and flatness verification, helps ensure the seal face can perform as intended.

But lapping is only one part of the total sealing system. 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼, 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 remain equally important.

Mechanical seal reliability starts at the 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 — but it does not end with lapping.

Precision lapping, the correct 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼, suitable 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲-𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, and proper 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 all work together to control leakage, heat generation, wear and overall seal stability.

Common face materials include Carbon, Silicon Carbide and Tungsten Carbide, selected according to the actual process conditions.
