Excited to share the successful completion of a mechanized, solar-powered water pumping system at Kabiza Primary School in Nkhotakota District.

The work was carried out by Central Engineering Workshop, with funding support from the Government of Germany through @
Malawi-Hilfe Schwindegg e.V.
The project has delivered safe, potable water to more than 2,000 learners and around 300 surrounding households.

Previously, the school relied on a single borehole with corroded pipes that often produced unsafe, contaminated water. Through support mobilized by MHS, the site has now been upgraded with a newly drilled borehole and a mechanized solar pumping system.

This improvement means pupils no longer need to cross the main road during breaks to fetch water—a route that previously posed safety risks due to heavy traffic, including frequent sugarcane trucks from Illovo Sugar Africa.

Beyond improving safety, the system will support better hygiene, save learning time, improve conditions for girls, and open up opportunities for initiatives such as a future school meals program.

Commissioning a 5,000L water pumping system at Chipeta Primary School in Chikungu, Area 38, Lilongwe.

The system draws water directly from a deep well and now provides potable water to over 300 students every day.

This milestone paves way for the school to confidently launch school feeding programme—boosting attendance while protecting learners from waterborne diseases and cholera, especially given the community’s proximity to the city’s largest dumping site.

Even better, the entire system is 100% solar-powered, meaning the school will not incur any electricity or water bills—delivering sustainability alongside impact.
