Why you must NOT open a hot radiator cap

A vehicle cooling system operates under high pressure, which raises the coolant’s boiling point above 100 °C.
When the radiator cap is opened while hot, the sudden pressure drop causes the superheated coolant to flash-boil into steam, violently ejecting hot liquid and v***r.

This can lead to:

Severe thermal burns to skin and eyes

Rapid coolant loss → engine overheating

Possible cylinder head or gasket damage

Safe practice

Always allow the engine to cool completely, confirm the upper hose is cold, and open the cap slowly with protection — or check coolant from the reservoir tank first.
