THE PERSON THAT GOD SEES
There is a childhood memory I still carry with me. I remember sitting in Sunday School (Church School) in our Church in one of the villages in Kiambu County. We were young, and still learning what it meant to know God.
One day we were told about some boys who were each given an egg and told to go and break it where nobody could see them. When they came back, three boys were excited. They had found places where they thought nobody could see them.
However, one of the boys came back holding his egg. When asked why he had not broken it, he said, “I went under the blankets but God was there. I went under the bed but God was there. I went to the toilet and HE was there, I went into a dark room but God was there, I even tried hiding behind locked doors but God was there.”
I was only a child, but that story has stayed with me.
The boy understood something I have come to appreciate even more with age: YOU MAY HIDE FROM PEOPLE, BUT YOU CANNOT HIDE FROM GOD.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:4
“Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
The secret place is where our public testimony is either confirmed or contradicted. People see the platform but God sees the person in us.
People hear the sermon but God hears the thoughts. People see the hands lifted in worship but God sees what happens when worship ends.
David looked around himself and saw it as a vanity and prayed in Psalm 139:23, “Search me, O God, and know my heart.”
God does not merely want to use our gifts. HE wants to deal with our hearts. You can be gifted and still need character. You can be anointed and still need transformation.
LET'S STOP CONFUSING BEING USED BY GOD WITH BEING FULLY FORMED BY GOD.
Your gift may open a door, but character determines what happens after YOU have entered.
As we go to Various places of Worship Today, I pray that we will have a true moment of reflecting, speaking to God to touch even the smallest details of our lives. May our private life and our public life never disagree.
May the life we live in secret be worthy of the God we speak about in public. May what happens when the cameras stop rolling, when the lights are off, when the mics are dropped be a true reflection of the God we speak and claim to live in.
