That reddish, purple, blue, or black film inside a stainless-steel water or steam line is not ordinary dirt, it may be stainless-steel rouge. Rouge forms when iron on or near the stainless-steel surface reacts with water and oxygen to create a thin iron-oxide deposit. It is most common in high-purity water, WFI, purified-water, and clean-steam systems, particularly where lines are regularly heated or sanitised. As water temperature rises, often above about 60°C, the protective chromium-rich layer on stainless steel can become less stable, dissolved oxygen conditions change, and iron can migrate to the surface more easily. The result is visible discolouration that may return even after cleaning if the underlying cause is not addressed.
Very pure water has very few dissolved minerals, which can make it more reactive with metal surfaces. Low oxygen levels, shifts in pH, chlorides or cleaning-chemical residues, and stagnant sections can all make the protective surface layer more vulnerable. Free iron introduced during fabrication, welding, grinding, carbon-steel tool contact, or poor cleaning can give rouge a starting point.
For a pharmaceutical, food, laboratory, or high-purity water system, rouge should be investigated, not simply wiped away, because it can signal a compromised passive surface and introduce particulate or contamination concerns.
