Where it is located and how it connects to the network can influence water pressure, reliability, pumping needs, and the ability to meet changing demand.

So the question isn’t only: How much water can we store?
It is also: How can we use that storage most effectively?

2.1 billion people still lack safely managed drinking water. 3.4 billion lack safely managed sanitation.

Behind these numbers is more than an infrastructure gap. It is a challenge of investment, planning, governance, and engineering capacity.

Every well-delivered water and sanitation project can mean healthier communities, better school attendance, greater economic opportunity, and more time returned to families.

: Engineering supervision is simply checking that construction matches the drawings.

: Supervision is where design meets reality.

Ground conditions, existing utilities, access constraints, and material availability rarely follow the drawings perfectly. That’s where real-time engineering judgement becomes essential.

A skilled site engineer doesn’t just inspect. They interpret design intent, resolve conflicts, assess changes, guide construction decisions, and protect quality and safety.

Building infrastructure is only the beginning. Maintaining it is what makes the investment last.

The pattern is familiar: an asset is built, budgets tighten, and maintenance is deferred. Small issues become major failures, and rehabilitation can ultimately cost several times more than timely maintenance.

In water networks, the impact is especially visible. Non-revenue water can exceed 50% in some utilities, with ageing and deteriorating infrastructure contributing significantly to these losses.

Behind every infrastructure project is a story that rarely makes it into the project report.

A water engineer who spent weeks on site building trust with a community that had been let down by previous projects, and who personally ensured the handover was done properly so the system would last.

A road designer who redesigned a junction three times because the original solution would have cut off access for elderly residents, even though no standard required it.

A young supervisor who flagged a structural concern under pressure and was proven right.

These are the human stories of engineering. They do not appear in technical papers or award nominations. But they are the stories that define what the profession actually is.

Twenty years ago, utility asset records were stored in filing cabinets, relying on paper maps and institutional knowledge. When a pipe failed, finding the relevant drawing could take hours or even days.

Today, GIS has transformed infrastructure management by providing real-time visibility of every pipe, valve, pump, and meter—along with their location, condition, and maintenance history.

The result? Faster response, smarter maintenance, and better infrastructure planning.

Water is becoming a global security issue.

Today’s water engineers need to understand cooperation, policy, and geopolitics.

Engineering knowledge is not just written in manuals. A significant portion of it lives in the experience of people who have solved the problems before you.

Mentorship in engineering is how that knowledge transfers, not through formal training alone, but through the thousands of small moments where an experienced engineer explains why a decision was made the way it was or flags a risk that only experience would catch.

Many senior engineers can trace specific decisions, habits, and ways of thinking to a single mentor who took the time to explain something properly.

If you are early in your career, seek out those conversations actively. Ask questions. Follow up. The technical knowledge you gain in five minutes with the right person may take years to learn any other way.
