Spend a week painting, living, and relaxing with a small group of artists on the shores of beautiful Lake Como. Here is paradise, where the majesty of the Alps meets the blue of one of the deepest glacial lakes in Europe. Part of the beauty of this picturesque area is the variety of subjects for an artist to explore...harbor scenes, street scenes, architecture and gardens.

Accomplished artist and instructor Calvin Liang be teaching with a focus of painting on location from direct observation. Plein air painting is a foundational part of training the eye to better understand the concepts of composition, design, and color harmony. The lessons will include 1) How to plan a composition that will be most effective for the artist's intentions and preferences; 2) How to better see and use warm and cool color in landscape; 3) How to command hardness and softness of edges to create space in the painting; 4) How to simplify the subject matter through the use of basic design, value, color, and drawing skills; 5) How to consider the reasons for different paint surface textures, and brushstroke direction over the forms; and 6) How to get the best possible results in a short time.

The workshop includes five full days of instruction and one free day for exploration or painting on you own. We will paint daily at different locations...Bellagio, Varenna, and Lenno, just to name a few. While working on our painting skills, having fun and taking in the beauty and sites of Lake Como will make this a trip to remember!

This workshop is open to only of 8-10 students to allow for highly individualized attention.

Tuscany...it's like a dream! Colorful rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves, picturesque cypress lined roads, blue skies and beautiful cloud formations, jovial, kind and friendly people, good food and great wine...too many wonderful things to name!

Come and join a small group of artists for a week of plein air painting, camaraderie and fun! Early June is a great time to visit and paint in Tuscany. The fields are a patchwork of shades of gold and green, bright yellow ginestra blooms everywhere, and if we're lucky we'll still have fields of poppies!

Talented artist and teacher, Mary Garrish, will teach for 5 full days. The workshop is open to all levels, but, students should have basic knowledge of how to set up and transport their equipment.

While painting outdoors may seem daunting to some, Mary will give the participant tools to simplify the process while extensively covering techniques that will help the student to capture enough information in the plein air study, so that it can be brought into and successfully used in the studio. She will cover all the basics: composition, value, color, and edges are just some of the topics that the class will develop. The workshop will be open to a maximum of 10 participants to allow highly individualized attention, regardless of the student's level of painting expertise! Mary will demonstrate in oil, but the workshop is suitable for oil, acrylic, and pastel.
