Adventure Expeditions

Adventure Expeditions Random exploring around the world! However, that journey sparked something in both of them that grew bigger than they both ever expected.

Katie did not expect a week long journey through the remote corners of Death Valley in a dusty Jeep when Gianmarco asked her out for the first time. After their exploration of abandoned mines, ghost towns and otherwise forgotten places, they decided that they could not keep the fun to themselves and that they must share this with their friends. The following weekend they recruited their first grou

p to embark with them to Death Valley, retracing their favorite spots they had found just the week before. Weekend after weekend, year after year, the group grew and the adventures became more widespread with trips all throughout California, the greater southwest and even into Mexico. Although the love for travel started it all, Gianmarco and Katie discovered a whole new dimension to it: a true passion for sharing with others the beauty of traveling differently - leaving the known road for the dusty trail. As interest in traveling to remote and lesser known areas grew, Gianmarco and Katie became the points of reference for those who yearned to set out on such journeys. Imparting the wisdom they had gained from their travels, they taught others how to prepare for such adventures, including recommendations for vehicle equipment, driving expectations, how to efficiently meal plan (without compromising food quality) and routing and GPS software usage. In between a thousand mile road trip to Baja California and a traverse through the deserts of Southern Utah, Katie and Gianmarco began to toy with the idea of sharing their adventures, tips and recommendations on a grander scale with a website. They also decided they wanted to go on a bigger adventure, one involving traveling to the southern most point of the Western Hemisphere… on a Ural sidecar motorcycle. Thus Adventure Expeditions was born, with the desire to inspire people to step out of their comfort zone and explore places not found in the typical guidebook. The opportunities around the globe are endless. Wether embarking on a weekend trek or a month long expedition, one can discover and explore beauty off the beaten path.

Last weekend in front of crackling bonfirefire and a glass of wine surrounded by Tuscany's hills we realized it's been almost 2 years since we last posted here. Since we came back from SA we've been very busy settling in a new life but we haven't stopped adventuring: we just took a break from sharing, and the break is officially over! A lot has changed but we still have Patty (our sidecar), Ruby (our jeep) and some new entries (KT's got her own wheels now!) along with old and new friends with passion for exploring off the beaten path. Our "first" post is from this past Easter weekend, where we ventured in a 3 days dirt ride where we crossed the italian Appennino mountain range north to south into Tuscany, following old trails and gps tracks. It's just the beginning, stay tuned :)

Tierra del Fuego - Argentina / Chile
Ushuaia- Punta Arenas

After a much deserved week of rest in Ushuaia we decided that it was time for Patty to head back to Europe: she was still missing part of the transmission, vibrating like a washing machine, leaking a lot of oil and in general seemed pretty beat up.
The absence of a viable shipping options from Ushuaia made us decide to go back to Punta Arenas, Chile, where we found a container leaving for Germany with only 3 bikes. We packed everything and headed back to Chile for a different route, which almost let us stranded in the middle of nowhere without gas. Fortunately we had forgotten a couple of liters under the sidecar, and were able to make it to the ferry for the mainland. 2 days to organize everything and then everything goes into the container!

Tierra del Fuego - Argentina
Ushuaia

After 7 months on the road, after much sand, mud, and many mechanical issues, after a lot of sun, rain, snow, countless smiles and the occasional tear… we made it to Ushuaia! We found a lovely family that offered their garage and just relaxed for a week. We drove around, drank some wine, cooked a lot of meat, got interviewed by the Argentine TV and enjoyed the area and the company of Mabel and Roberto.

Tierra del Fuego - Chile
Tierra del fuego chilena

The magnificent solitude of Tierra del fuego struck us right away, with kilometers of dirt roads and endless places to explore. Wind, cold and gas were the major issues of this region: too much of the first two, not enough of the third one. Despite that, we did some amazing remote camping, surrounded by guanacos. And right before crossing into Argentina for the last time, one more river crossing showed up..

Patagonia - Chile
Torres del Paine y ruta por el estrecho de Magallenes

After crossing into Chile (again) we move toward Torres del Paine, which we were lucky enough to see between the clouds. Without a place to sleep and with freezing winds constantly blowing we found a small shelter for the night, with the company of a couple of bicycle riders. After riding through the park we decided to keep moving, as the weather was getting worse and rain was forecast. After a technical stop in Puerto Natales for one night, we head for the Magellan Strait, where we found only stronger and colder winds, and no accommodation. Fortunately some construction workers and their families offered us a place for the night, and cooked us the most amazing lamb ever. We went to bed at 3am, warm and happy.

Patagonia - Argentina
El Chalten y El Calafate
The terrible mud that crushed our transmission and just about any other moving part and left us stranded for days in the beautiful El Chalten, where to took advantage of the warm weather to go hiking around el Fitzroy. We cleaned up the bike at best and head for El Calafate, where we were able to do some surgery on the bike and camped with the view of the Glaciar Perito Moreno. After a much unexpected visit from some friends from the SF we dedicated ourself to the get back on the road with the help of a skilled "tornero", and a couple of days later we were on our way to Chile-again!
