Rivers are Lifeline of our Planet, and hence ours. A major blow to health of our Rivers is Sand mining.
River sand is preferred for construction because it requires less processing and better availability than other sources. But it comes at a huge cost to the river and those living around it.
Excessive sand mining can alter the river bed, force the river to change course, erode banks and lead to flooding. It also destroys the habitat of aquatic animals and micro-organisms besides affecting groundwater recharge.
The Indian courts have also ruled against the use of river sand due to the exploitation of natural river beds and its environmental impact.
A few states are exploring options like manufactured sand, produced by crushing of rocks and quarry stones, to meet the ever-increasing demand of the construction industry.
Engineered sand is the only alternative to River Sand.

Sand for construction is most often mined from rivers. It’s easy to pull the grains up with suction pumps or even buckets, and easy to transport once you’ve got a full boatload. But dredging a riverbed can destroy the habitat occupied by bottom-dwelling organisms. The churned-up sediment can cloud the water, suffocating fish and blocking the sunlight that sustains underwater vegetation.
Engineered sand is the only alternative to River Sand. The Supreme court has also ruled against the use of river sand due to the exploitation of natural river beds and its environmental impact. Thus we focus on shifting the focus from river sand to crushed stone sand.
