๐ŸŒ World Environment Day 2026 | FIPPI and ICFRE-IWST Workshop on Urea-Free Resin Technologies

The Federation of Indian Plywood & Panel Industry (FIPPI), in collaboration with ICFREโ€“ of Wood Science & Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), Bengaluru, successfully organized a workshop on โ€œInnovative Approaches on the Development of Urea Free Resin: Open Discussion & Need for Validationโ€ on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from industry leaders, researchers, resin manufacturers, and other stakeholders. The discussions and deliberations clearly highlighted the importance of transitioning towards urea-free resin technologies, including soya flour-based adhesive systems, MF-bio and PF-bio resins, as well as the use of nano additives for enhancing adhesive performance and product quality.

FIPPI expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. Shakti Chauhan, Director, IWST, and the entire IWST team for their support and collaboration in organizing this important initiative. We also thank all FIPPI members and industry representatives for their active participation and valuable contributions to the discussions.

The workshop featured excellent technical presentations by Dr. Mamatha B. S., Scientist, IWST and Shri Vaidyanathan Hariharan, Founder, PlyQi. Their presentations significantly enriched the understanding of emerging alternatives to conventional urea-based resins and their practical implementation in the industry.

The deliberations provided valuable insights and a clear roadmap for the plywood and panel industry to accelerate its transition towards a more sustainable, environmentally responsible, and urea-free future.

FIPPI Calls for GST Process Reform Through Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) on Agroforestry Wood Purchases

With a significant share of India's agroforestry wood traded through unregistered suppliers, the current GST framework often leads to Input Tax Credit (ITC) challenges, tax cascading, and revenue leakages.

By shifting GST payment responsibility to registered buyers under RCM, India can:
โœ… Expand the tax base
โœ… Reduce revenue leakages
โœ… Enable seamless ITC flow
โœ… Improve transparency and traceability across the wood value chain

A practical policy step towards strengthening India's agroforestry ecosystem and formalizing the timber supply chain.

India spent โ‚น78,321 crore on wood and wood-based imports in FY 2024โ€“25.

What if a significant part of this demand could be met by our own farmers?

By strengthening agroforestry and implementing progressive policy reforms, India can:
๐ŸŒณ Increase domestic timber production
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพ Provide farmers with an additional source of income
๐Ÿ’ฐ Save valuable foreign exchange
๐Ÿญ Support Indian industries
๐ŸŒ Promote environmental sustainability

FIPPI calls for:
โœ… National Agroforestry Act
โœ… National Agroforestry Board
โœ… Transit freedom for farm-grown timber
โœ… Digital Certificate of Origin & Ownership
โœ… Equal policy support for agroforestry crops

Together, we can build a self-reliant and sustainable future for India's wood sector.

On International Biodiversity Day, Indiaโ€™s 30-year journey with agroforestry stands as a global example of sustainable sourcing. By relying on trees outside forests, weโ€™ve reduced pressure on natural ecosystems, conserved biodiversity, and strengthened farmer livelihoods.

Agroforestry continues to build ecological resilienceโ€”enhancing carbon sequestration, improving soil health, and increasing tree cover for a greener, more sustainable future.

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, the Federation of Indian Plywood & Panel Industry (FIPPI), and ICFRE โ€“ Institute of Wood Science & Technology (IWST), is jointly organizing an Online Workshop on:

โ€œInnovative Approaches on the Development of Urea Free Resin: Open Discussion & Need for Validationโ€

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 5th June 2026 (Friday)
โฐ 11:00 AM onwards

The plywood and panel industry is currently undergoing a significant technological shift toward the adoption of bio-resins and environmentally sustainable adhesive systems. The present global scenario, with the ongoing West Asia crisis, presents an opportunity for manufacturers to transition towards bio-based (urea-free) adhesives, such as those based on soya and flour as sustainable alternatives.

The workshop will bring together industry experts, academic and research institutions, resin manufacturers, testing agencies, and stakeholders to discuss emerging technologies, challenges, validation pathways, and future opportunities for sustainable adhesive systems in plywood and panel products.

Join us for an insightful discussion towards sustainable adhesive technologies. Further details and the participation link will be circulated shortly.

On the occasion of National Agroforestry Day, 8th May, the Federation of Indian Plywood & Panel Industry (FIPPI) recognizes the vital role of agroforestry in building a sustainable, resilient, and self-reliant India.
Agroforestry supports:
โœ”๏ธ Higher farmer incomes
โœ”๏ธ Carbon sequestration & climate resilience
โœ”๏ธ Reduced pressure on natural forests
โœ”๏ธ Sustainable raw material supply for wood-based industries

On this National Agroforestry Day, FIPPI advocates for the nationwide implementation of a National Agroforestry Act to recognize farm-grown timber as distinct from forest produce, and promote simplified regulations, digital transparency, and access to carbon credit opportunities for farmers.
This would serve as a bold and transformative step to empower towards free inter-state and intra-state trade and commerce of farm wood๐ŸŒฟ

Tomorrow, 8th May, marks National Agroforestry Day โ€” a reminder of the critical role agroforestry plays in building a greener and self-reliant India.

Today, nearly 90% of the raw material used by Indiaโ€™s plywood and panel industry comes from agroforestry timber, while only 10% is met through imports. This reflects the growing strength of Indiaโ€™s agroforestry ecosystem and the vital role played by farmers in supporting sustainable industrial growth.

At FIPPI, we believe the future lies in achieving 100% AGRIWOOD โ€” a plywood and wood panel sector fully powered by sustainable agroforestry plantations.

More trees on farms means:
โœ”๏ธ Higher farmer incomes
โœ”๏ธ Reduced import dependence
โœ”๏ธ Climate resilience
โœ”๏ธ Sustainable industrial growth

Empowering farmers to grow trees is not just good for the environment โ€” it is essential for Indiaโ€™s green economy.
