We were proud to conduct a live demonstration of Megger’s advanced TAU 3 system at the Department of Power, Meghalaya.

Partnering with Megger has always been about more than just delivering equipment — it’s about bringing innovation closer to the people who keep our power systems running every single day.

During the session, the room was filled with curiosity, technical discussions, and real-world problem solving. Engineers and officials from the Department of Power, Meghalaya actively engaged with the TAU 3, exploring its advanced diagnostic capabilities and understanding how it can strengthen reliability, accuracy, and efficiency in high-voltage testing.

Today, our Assistant Manager carried out a field visit to the Meghalaya Power Substation, reviewing on-ground operating conditions and evaluating site-specific technical requirements.

Working Principle of Oil BDV Test Kit-

The working principle of the Oil BDV Test Kit is based on the controlled application of increasing AC high voltage across electrodes immersed in insulating oil, until electrical breakdown occurs.

1. High-Voltage Generation
The internal high-voltage transformer steps up the input supply voltage to a controlled high-voltage output. The voltage rise is regulated by the HV control board, ensuring smooth and uniform voltage application.

2. Voltage Application to Electrodes
The high-voltage output is applied to two precisely spaced electrodes submerged in the oil sample within the test chamber. The electrode gap is maintained according to international standards (IEC / ASTM / IS).

3. Oil Agitation
An agitator motor gently stirs the oil during testing. This eliminates air bubbles, moisture concentration, and localized impurities, ensuring a homogeneous oil condition and accurate test results.

4. Continuous Monitoring & Measurement
The measurement circuit continuously senses the applied voltage and monitors current flow between the electrodes. As the voltage increases, the insulating oil resists electrical conduction until its dielectric strength is exceeded.

5. Breakdown Detection
When the oil’s dielectric strength fails, an electrical arc forms between the electrodes. This sudden rise in current is detected instantly by the voltage sensing and breakdown detection circuit.

6. Automatic Shutdown & Safety Protection
Upon breakdown detection, the protective relay and discharge resistor circuit immediately isolate the high-voltage source and safely discharge residual energy, preventing damage to components and ensuring operator safety.

7. Result Display
The breakdown voltage value at the instant of failure is automatically recorded and displayed on the digital display panel as the BDV value (kV).
