Uttarakhand Pride: Veer Chander Singh Garwali
This hero of Peshawar case (post freedom) was born on 25th December, 1891 in Rainisera (Manso), Thailisen - Distric Pauri Garwal. He didn't attain any formal primary education, yet several journies during his service at Army, and during freedom fight became his real and practical learning.
During the freedom fight he met Mahatma Gandhi and become his follower.
On 23rd April, 1930 in a conference held under Civil Disobedience Movement a squad of Garhwal Rifle Batalian rejected to fire on a group of Pathans. The leader of this squad was 'Veer Chander Singh Garwali'.
Thus for disobeying his British Commander he was sent to jail for lifetime imprisonment.
After spending 11 years, 3 months and 18 days in different jails he was released lm 1941. During his long journey to jail he came in contact with mant great national leaders.
In 1946 he returned to his village and resided in Dhruvpur Village, Kotdwar. And then after prolonged disease he passed away at Ram Manohar Lohai Hospital in Delhi.
Veer Chander Singh Garwali is an immortal name in Indian History. To pay tribute to this freedom fighter, a ticket was issued in 1994 by Indian Government.
