In India, Dr. Sunil Shah of Dr Sunil Shah Eye Hospital, Maninagar, Ahmedabad, has completed a bilateral implantation of the 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱™ 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗢𝗟, addressing pre-existing corneal astigmatism alongside the lens exchange. The operating surgeon reports 6/6 distance and N6 near in both eyes at follow-up, with the patient managing daily tasks without habitual correction.

Extend™ is the 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹-𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗳𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀 𝗜𝗢𝗟. Bessel optics — a non-diffractive, needle-shaped beam profile — produce an extended depth of focus rather than a single focal point, covering distance and functional intermediate vision without the complexity of multifocal designs. Distance vision remains comparable to a standard monofocal. The toric platform carries that same optic while correcting pre-existing corneal astigmatism, so astigmatic eyes are not pushed back to a distance-only result.

The case is straightforward. A healthy ocular surface is critical for successful cataract surgery. Undiagnosed ocular surface disease (OSD) compromises biometric accuracy — leading to erratic keratometry, inaccurate IOL power selection, and undermined premium IOL performance. The answer is proactive surface management, before and after IOL implantation.

So we built an Integrated Care Pathway that pairs two technologies:

𝗝𝗘𝗧𝗧® 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲. A patented direct-current (DC) device. Using direct current flow, it promotes glandular function, improves tear quality, and stabilizes the ocular surface — before and after surgery.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆® 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. The Intensity® Pentafocal IOL uses a Dynamic Light Utilization algorithm (93.5% light efficiency) to deliver continuous vision from distance to near, minimize visual disturbances, and preserve contrast sensitivity in mesopic conditions.

In practice, this means:

A 2025 study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine (De Gregorio et al., PMID 40094818) showed that even with best‑corrected 20/20, up to 35% of patients remained dissatisfied and 44% reported postsurgical ocular‑surface system failure, with Schirmer and TBUT declining and MGD worsening. Ocular‑surface health is therefore a core part of refractive cataract care.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹‑𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗛𝗗 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻
The Intensity pentafocal IOL delivers full‑range high‑definition vision without a visual gap, while preserving excellent contrast sensitivity across everyday lighting conditions.

At DOC 2026, Hanita Lenses was pleased to present new data on the Extend™, our enhanced monofocal IOL based on Bessel optics technology.

During his lecture at the congress, Prof. Gerd U. Auffarth shared both laboratory and clinical findings demonstrating Extend™'s ability to provide excellent distance vision while enhancing intermediate visual performance.

The clinical results, collected at the International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC) and the David J. Apple International Laboratory in Heidelberg, included 30 patients (46 eyes) with follow-up of 3–6 months. Key findings included:

Extend™ SL (40 eyes):

- Postop refraction: SE −0.18 ± 0.56D → excellent emmetropic target accuracy
- Monocular defocus curve: VA ≥ 0.2 logMAR across the full +1.00D to −1.00D range
- Binocular defocus curve: VA ≥ 0.1 logMAR (+1.00D to −1.00D); ≥ 0.2 logMAR extended to −1.50D
- Contrast sensitivity: Excellent across all spatial frequencies; no contrast loss typical of multifocal IOLs
- Spectacle independence: >40% of patients spectacle-free for computer use; >30% for reading

Extend™ SL Toric (6 eyes):

- Postop SE: −0.15 ± 0.09D → near-perfect refractive accuracy
- UDVA and CDVA both approaching 0.0 logMAR
- Rotational stability: Mean axis deviation 4° ± 2.6°; 80% of eyes within 5°; no cases exceeding 10°
The presentation also included optical bench data showing performance comparable to TECNIS Eyhance® across multiple objective optical quality metrics. We are pleased to share a new peer-reviewed publication in BMC Ophthalmology (June 2026) featuring Hanita’s Extend™ IOL:

"Monofocal intraocular lens based on the Bessel principle for improved intermediate vision: a comparative assessment"
Conducted by researchers at the David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology (Heidelberg University) — Frederick Kremser, Weijia Yan, Prof. Ramin Khoramnia, Prof. Gerd U. Auffarth, and Dr. Grzegorz Łabuz —, the study presents the first independent optical bench characterization of the Extend™ monofocal plus IOL.

Extend™ takes a fundamentally different optical route to extended depth of focus. Instead of diffractive rings or higher-order aspheres, it applies the Bessel beam principle via a central conical axicon surface, elongating the focal range while preserving a single, far-dominant peak.

Under full ISO-compliant conditions (OptiSpheric IOL PRO2), the study compared Extend™ with the TECNIS Eyhance (ICB00).

Key findings:

• MTF at 50 lp/mm (3 mm aperture): Extend™ 0.38 ± 0.01 vs. Eyhance 0.36 ± 0.01
• Identical distance visual acuity at far focus: −0.09 logMAR for both lenses
• Overlapping through-focus visual acuity curves, with differences below 0.02 logMAR
• Comparable PSF profiles, distinct from the halo patterns typically associated with EDOF and trifocal IOLs

The takeaway:

Extend™ demonstrates optical performance comparable to the reference lens evaluated.
