Irish Cement Platin Works marked its first Safety Week with a strong focus on what matters most – our people and the responsibility we all share to keep one another safe.

Throughout the week, employees and contractors took part in practical sessions, demonstrations and conversations designed to build awareness, confidence and encourage safer choices both at work and beyond. From working at height and fire safety to conveyor safety and interactive workshops, the week provided time to pause, reflect and refocus on critical safety behaviours.

To capture the impact of the week, a short video brings together voices from across the site, including Plant Manager Peter Murtagh, our Health & Safety Officer Ann McEleavey, employees and contractors. It highlights the importance of communication, speaking up and treating contractors as partners in our safety culture.

Safety Week reinforced a simple but important message: safety is about looking out for ourselves and each other every day; and ensuring everyone goes home safely to their families.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to making our first Safety Week such a success.

Irish Cement marks World Environment Day by highlighting the practical steps being taken across our operations to address climate change and support a more sustainable future.

The introduction of solar power at our Platin plant is one example of how Irish Cement continues to invest in initiatives that help reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency across our sites. Beyond our operations, Irish Cement takes pride in our sites; from biodiversity areas to the flowers and green spaces maintained by our teams, helping to support local habitats and enhance our working environments.

On World Environment Day, Irish Cement recognises the collective effort of our colleagues who contribute every day to improving how we operate, adapt and plan for the future.

Irish Cement Platin Works recently enjoyed another great Pensioners’ Party, this year held in Donegans, Monasterboice.

It was lovely to see such a strong turnout, with over 120 pensioners and partners attending – from recent retirees to those who left the plant more than 24 years ago. The afternoon gave everyone a chance to catch up, share stories and connect with old friends.

Peter Murtagh spoke on the day, introducing himself as the new Plant Manager and sharing a few updates from the plant, including our new solar panels and other recent developments.

Irish Cement is proud to host this event each year and to stay connected with those who have played such an important part in the history of Platin Works. We’re already looking forward to welcoming everyone back again next year.

A big thank you to Sinéad Garavan, Leanne Caffrey, Helen Bennett and the team for organising a great afternoon.

Irish Cement recently welcomed Sacred Heart 5th year students to Platin Works for a comprehensive school tour showcasing the full scope of our operations.

The visit took students on a journey from quarry to kiln to control room, providing a clear and engaging overview of how cement is manufactured and how different parts of the site work together. The group were highly engaged throughout and felt comfortable asking questions during the tour.

Thank you to Paul Owens & Frank Hughes for delivering such an impressive experience and for representing Irish Cement with professionalism and enthusiasm!

Irish Cement recently welcomed 31 third‑year students from Coláiste Mhichíl – CBS Sexton Street, Limerick as part of a school tour focused on learning more about our operations and career pathways.

The visit was supported by Sam Winston and Fionn McEvoy, who took time to engage with the students and share information into the cement manufacturing process.

School visits like this are an important part of how Irish Cement supports education and helps students gain a better understanding of our industry, sustainability and future careers within the sector.

Thank you to Sam and Fionn for representing Irish Cement so positively and to the students and teachers from Coláiste Mhichíl for taking the time to visit.

Irish Cement Platin Works held their first ever Safety Week, reinforcing the most important message across our sites: safety is about looking out for ourselves and each other, every day.

Throughout the week, employees and contractors took part in practical sessions, demonstrations and conversations designed to build awareness, confidence and encourage safer choices both at work and beyond.

The week began with a focus on working at height, including practical demonstrations and a powerful talk from James (Jimmy) Gorry, who shared his own personal experience and the lasting impact of not completing a job safely.

Fire Safety followed on Tuesday, with hands-on training sessions across site to build awareness around fire prevention and emergency response.

Wednesday was the main event of Safety Week, where we held an event in CityNorth Hotel & Conference Centre. Theatre at Work delivered an engaging, interactive reenactment, drawing the audience into a real‑life scenario that sparked discussion and reflection across our teams.

Thursday’s focus on conveyor safety reinforced the importance of controls, guarding and safe systems of work in preventing incidents on site. The week concluded with a wrap‑up event in our Mechanical Workshop with a BBQ and prizes, celebrating the brilliant engagement and collective effort shown throughout the week.

Safety Week matters because it creates time to pause, reflect and talk about what really matters: our people, the awareness we build together and the responsibility we all share to keep one another safe.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in Safety Week and in particular well done to McEleavey Ann and David Carroll for organising a brilliant series of events
