A parking deck is not a floor you walk on. It carries cars, so the slab above the membrane is built to a different standard than a screed indoors.

1. The edge strip goes down first, around the whole perimeter — 80 m of it here. The slab has to be free to move against the walls; a slab cast tight into a parapet cracks at the corners in the first summer.

2. Two layers of mesh, not one. Wheel loads are point loads that move; a single layer at mid-depth does not hold the top surface together under them.

3. Every service, sleeve and duct is set before the pour. Once 200 mm of concrete is down, adding one pipe means cutting the deck open — and cutting the deck open means opening the waterproofing under it.

4. C25/30 with polypropylene fibre, 270 m², about 61 m³, placed and levelled by hand over the mesh. The fibre works against early shrinkage cracking, which is what you get on an open deck under a Cyprus sun.

Everything above the membrane is replaceable. This layer decides how the deck behaves for the next thirty years.

Under a parking deck there are 1.5 mm that decide everything.

This roof is designed to carry cars. Everything above the membrane is replaceable - the membrane itself is not: once the slab is cast, it is buried for the life of the building.

1. Reinforced PVC membrane, 1.5 mm, to EN 13956 and CE marked. Rolled across the full deck, seams hot-air welded, laps checked while they are still open.

2. Perimeter and upstands fixed with a compression bar. This is where flat roofs leak first - not in the field, but where the membrane turns up a wall.

3. Internal and external corners and the parapet outlets are detailed by hand, one by one. On this deck: 12 corners and 2 parapet outlets, each closed before anything went on top.

4. The whole field is inspected before the reinforcement arrives. After that day nobody sees this layer again - the design life of the system is 30 years and it has to run without a single visit.

Waterproofing is not the layer you see. It is the layer you never get to look at twice.
