*Career Tuesday: The Best Coating Inspector of the Next Decade May Not Be the One Who Inspects the Most*

For decades, the value of a coating inspector was measured by experience in the field—the number of inspections completed, the structures assessed, and the hours spent on site.

But what if that's about to change?

Today, drones can inspect flare stacks without scaffolding. Robots can enter confined spaces that were once inaccessible. AI can process thousands of inspection images in minutes, identifying anomalies that might take a human far longer to review.

If technology can collect more data, more safely, and more efficiently than ever before, then perhaps the real value of tomorrow's coating inspector won't be collecting information.

It may be interpreting it.

The industry is moving from an era where finding defects was the challenge to one where making sense of enormous amounts of inspection data is becoming the real competitive advantage.

Anyone can generate data.

For years, engineering has rewarded people for having the right answers.

Pass the exam. Solve the equation. Find the defect. Recommend the solution.

But the future of engineering is changing.

As AI becomes better at retrieving information, generating calculations, summarizing standards, and analyzing large volumes of data, simply having answers is becoming less of a competitive advantage.

The real advantage is knowing which questions to ask.

In industrial coatings, the first question isn't always, "Which coating system should we use?"

It might be:

"Why did the previous system fail?"

"What operating conditions changed?"

"Is corrosion the real problem, or is it poor design, trapped moisture, or inadequate drainage?"

"Are we treating the symptom instead of the root cause?"

The quality of these questions often determines the quality of the engineering solution.

The same applies to career growth.

Instead of asking:

Ask:
