This is a new one for me today.

The client asked me to create a 3D surface model file for a bulldozer.

The GPS equipped bulldozer will be on site for about 6 weeks forming the road base, pile mats and landscaping. With the files loaded, the driver can see where he is on site and what level his blade needs to be to obtain the correct grade level.

I’d never done a file for a bulldozer before but had a couple of days to prepare for this. A few CAD drawings and YouTube videos later and we had the finished product.

I gave the driver a USB stick this morning containing the files but he’d never set one up himself before. I sent him off for a break whilst I had a play around and got it up and running. I did a few checks with my own survey equipment and confirmed everything was good.

Very accurate, the bulldozer blade position was within 15mm of design position and after a few passes, everything looks great. Watch this space!

A bit of everything on this job in the centre of Leeds.

Demolition, remediation, footbridge over the river, sheet piling, service trenches, road formation and pile mats in preparation for a developer building some multi storey apartments.

Will it ever stop raining?

A new start today on a fresh parcel of land at Kingswood, Kingston upon Hull.

“In 1989 Hull City Council and estate developers agreed to jointly develop the land west of the Wawne Road, north of the Foredike/Wawne Drain, and east of the River Hull. Planning permission for this large development was given in December 1994 -development of the entire area was expected to take 15 to 20 years”

There is also a large retail park on Kingswood anchored by a large Asda store.

My first visit here was in 2001 and since then we have positioned almost 5000 of the 6000 planned properties and a significant amount of roads and sewers.

Our main client on here has been Roger Bullivant Ltd who are a specialist piling and foundation company who have been contracted by the various house builders on the site. We have also carried out work for a number of ground workers on the site including T Balfe Construction.

We have provided alignment pegs for a 910 meter path to link a new housing development to the local woodland park.

Slight pause in the middle of the job to allow the farmer to harvest his crop.

A land survey carried out in Bedfordshire this week. The homeowner is planning an extension to their Grade II listed former watermill.

Our client who is a specialist in temporary dams and reinforcement of bridges, riverbanks and sea walls has been instructed to remove and reinstate the timber retaining wall to the existing river and investigate the water course underneath the existing house.

We were asked to survey the site and also measure a series of cross sections through the river to enable the design of the new retaining wall.

The newest recruit, Rhodri, donned his dry suit and entered the river.

We spent the day dodging a family of swans who were very inquisitive.
