Offices are sitting empty thanks to the rise of working from home - and it’s left a lot of commercial landlords asking the same question… what now?

This project at 8-10 Colston Avenue is a great example of what can happen when you stop seeing an office block for what it was, and start looking at what it could become.

Reclaiming tired commercial space and giving it a new purpose isn’t just good for developers - it’s good for cities too. Empty buildings don’t bring life to a city centre. Smart redevelopment does.

Projects like this are becoming more common as landlords rethink how to make older buildings commercially viable again. And honestly, some of the most interesting projects we work on start with “this building no longer works as intended”.

Grand Central site visits have to be Aggie’s favourite at the moment - although I’m starting to think she’s only in it for the beach walks afterwards. 🌊

Not a bad way to finish a site meeting to be fair. Watching a building with so much history slowly come back to life, then heading straight for the seafront.

Weston might test everyone’s patience sometimes, but projects like this are exactly why places deserve a second chance.

No two days are the same at BDC Structural Engineering and honestly, that's exactly how I like it.

One week I'm working on a historic manor house. The next it's a contemporary eco home in Salcombe, a solar panel roof survey, a bespoke oak frame, or a structural assessment for a well-known Bristol landmark.

From a family extension to a nationally recognised visitor attraction - every project gets the same attention and care.

That variety is what makes this job so rewarding. And it means that whatever you're planning, there's a very good chance we've handled something just like it.

The surveyor said the cracks were "just cosmetic." They weren't.

I was looking through our project portfolio this morning and it stopped me in my tracks.

Not two of our projects are the same.

Oak frame homes. Industrial buildings. Nursing homes. Brewery plants. Loft conversions. Student accommodation. Bespoke private extensions. Rolls Royce turbine test cells.

That variety is something I'm genuinely proud of - because it means whatever you're building, whatever you're dreaming of, there's a very good chance we've tackled something just as complex, just as unique.

Structural engineering isn't one-size-fits-all. Neither are we.

Anyone else suddenly getting a wave of enquiries for external emergency escape stairs?

It feels like it’s gone from the odd one here and there… to constant. Access issues, compliance upgrades, “we need a solution quickly” - all landing at once.

I’m not aware of any single new directive, but something’s clearly shifted. Whether it’s tighter enforcement, insurers asking more questions, or people finally reviewing older buildings properly.

Either way, it’s becoming a regular conversation.

If it’s on your radar at the moment, you’re definitely not the only one.

Another couple of solid project wins in London.

One with a new hotel group we’ve been looking to get involved with… and another project at London Marriott Hotel Maida Vale - always a good sign when you’re brought back onto sites you already know.

It’s a nice balance. New doors opening, while long-standing relationships continue to grow.

If you’re in hospitality and need someone who can just get stuck in and figure things out, you know where I am.

Going through the archives for the Grand Central Hotel and just look at these beauties.

It’s been part of Weston’s story for years - not just a building, but somewhere people came to stay, to visit, to experience the town.

That’s exactly why it deserves another shot. Not to sit empty, but to be brought back to life and play its part in Weston again.
