The Grand Central opened in 1925, which means it's now been part of Weston-super-Mare for more than 100 years. Sitting right in the heart of the seafront, generations of visitors would have known this building as part of their trip to Weston.

Sadly, like a lot of our old seaside buildings, its best years looked like they might be behind it. The hotel closed decades ago and much of the building has been sitting empty ever since.

That's why projects like this matter.

We can't save every old building, and sometimes bringing them back to life is considerably more complicated than knocking them down and starting again. But when you've got a building that's been part of a town for over a century, I think it's worth trying.

Regeneration isn't just about making an old building look nice again. It's about finding a new purpose for it so it can actually become part of the town for another 100 years.

We've been involved with Grand Central for a long time now, so seeing the progress being made is particularly satisfying.

Still plenty to do, but it's great to see this bit of Weston's history getting another chapter.

Ever walked through a building and wondered, "Is that supposed to look like that?"

I was in London recently for one of those "can you take a look at this?" jobs, and it reminded me how much is going on in the buildings around us that most people will never notice.

Buildings move, materials deteriorate, things get altered and sometimes previous repairs don't quite solve the original problem. Most of the time you'll walk straight past without giving it a second thought.

That's a big part of what I enjoy about structural engineering. It's not always about designing something new. Quite often it's working out what's happened to something that's already there, why it's happened and whether anything actually needs to be done about it.

So if you've ever spotted something in a building and thought, "That doesn't look right", send it over.

I'll tell you whether it's worth worrying about... or whether you can stop staring at it every time you walk past.

Ever had something repaired… only for exactly the same problem to come back?

I was in London recently looking at a stone staircase where the balustrade had started to fail. At first glance, you might think it just needs repairing and you're done.

Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple.

The spindles are fixed directly into the stone and, over time, the stone itself has broken away. We could simply repair what’s there, but if we don’t address why it failed, there’s every chance we’ll be back having the same conversation again.

And that's the bit of structural engineering people don't always see.

Sometimes our job isn't working out how to fix something. It's working out why it failed and how we make sure it doesn't happen again.

If you've got something that's been "fixed" before but keeps coming back, it might be time to stop patching it up and work out what's actually causing it.

There's something quite satisfying about visiting a site at this stage. At the moment it doesn't look like much more than a very large hole in the ground, but give it a few months and it'll be a completely different picture.

That's one of the nice things about being involved from the beginning - we get to see it go from drawings and calculations to an actual home taking shape.

Aggie, on the other hand, just saw a very large hole and assumed we'd finally designed a project specifically for her.

Can't fault the enthusiasm.

One of the reasons I enjoy working on older buildings is they never do what you expect.

The drawings say one thing, the building says something completely different.

You take a bit of plaster off - find an old doorway or a hidden steel beam, maybe a timber someone fitted fifty years ago.

Or evidence that three different builders have all solved the same problem in three different ways.

You never stop learning with old buildings.

Which is probably why I still enjoy turning up to work after all these years.

Every now and then a project comes along where you can see exactly what it's going to become.

This is one of them.

At the moment, the views are doing most of the heavy lifting.

Give it a bit of time... the property will soon catch up.

First she had to share the spotlight with AI, and now she's got an apprentice.

Don't worry, Aggie. Every good site needs an apprentice to do the hard work while you supervise from the digger. 🐾

The sunshine always gets the phone ringing, which is great.

But before you fill your roof with solar panels...Ask yourself one question.

Can your roof actually take them?

Most can - Some need checking.

Older roofs, previous alterations or unusual roof structures can all make a difference. It's a bit like buying a roof box for your car - You wouldn't just keep loading it up without checking the weight limit first (or at least you shouldn't...)

The same principle applies to your house.
