Most people know Josh as part of the team here at BDC Structures, but what many don't see is what he does when he's not in the office or out on site.

Josh is also a volunteer with HM Coastguard Search and Rescue.

"In HM Coastguard, we are highly trained in multiple aspects of search and rescue. This includes rope rescue, mud rescue, water and flood rescue, casualty care (first aid) and search. My team and I have to train regularly to keep up our competency in these areas to remain ready for all types of jobs, 24/7.

I joined HM Coastguard Search and Rescue to give back to my community and help others on their worst day."

It's easy to forget that behind the day job are people who give up their evenings, weekends and spare time to help complete strangers when they need it most.

As a business owner, I'm proud of the work Josh does for BDC. As his dad, I'm even prouder of the work he does for his community.

Well done, Josh - and thank you to all the volunteers who give their time to keep others safe.

Something I think more homeowners should know:

Your architect designs the space. Your structural engineer makes it stand up.

These are two different skill sets and you need both working together for most significant building projects.

At BDC Structural Engineering, we regularly work alongside architects, developers, and contractors to make sure the structural side of a project is solid from the start. not bolted on at the end as an afterthought.

If you're working on a project, we'd love to be involved early.

Trying to sell a property and been asked questions about cladding?

You're not alone.

Since Grenfell, lenders, insurers and buyers are carrying out far greater scrutiny on buildings with external cladding systems.

In many cases the building itself isn't the issue.

The problem is proving what's there, how it performs and whether the right assessments have been completed.

The earlier you understand your position, the easier it is to avoid delays when a sale or refinance comes along.

Sometimes the most expensive building problem isn't a structural defect.

It's missing paperwork.

If you're unsure what documentation you need, or you've been asked for certificates and don't know where to start, get in touch. We can help you understand what's required and point you in the right direction before it becomes a costly delay.

I've lost count of the number of times someone has told me:

"AI says this extension will work."

And to be fair, AI is brilliant at generating ideas.

The problem is that AI doesn't have to explain to the homeowner why their wall has fallen over.

Structural engineering isn't just about drawing a nice extension. It's about understanding load paths, foundations, existing construction, and all the hidden things that stop buildings ending up where they shouldn't.

AI can help start the conversation.

But there's still a big difference between something that looks good on a screen and something that works in the real world.

Have you used AI for home renovation ideas yet?

What actually causes structural failure?

It’s rarely one dramatic moment. Most of the time it’s a build-up of smaller issues that have been missed, ignored, altered or simply underestimated over time.

Water ingress. Poor alterations. Movement. Overloading. Corrosion. Fire damage. Changes in building use. Bad workmanship. Sometimes it’s age. Sometimes it’s someone cutting corners.

The scary part? A lot of buildings show warning signs long before failure happens.

TJ Hughes is one of those buildings that's been talked about for so long, you start to wonder if it'll ever actually happen.

Seeing it now, so close to completion, is genuinely exciting.

Projects like this don't just give an old building a new lease of life - they bring energy back into town centres and prove that some buildings are worth fighting for.

We're thrilled to have played a part in its journey and can't wait to show you some of the finished interiors once everything is complete.

Big things happening at the TJ Hughes redevelopment, Weston-super-Mare! 🏗️

The scaffolding is starting to come down — and the transformation underneath is looking sharp. After months of work installing our Smart Systems aluminium curtain wall and tilt-and-turn windows across the Beach Side and High Street elevations, we're getting close to the big reveal.

It's been a fantastic project to be part of, bringing 36 new residential flats to the heart of Weston. Watch this space — the finished frontage is going to look stunning. 👀

Massive thanks to the team for the graft on this one.

Dreaming of an open-plan ground floor? 🏡

Removing a load-bearing wall is one of the most transformative things you can do to a home - but it needs to be done right. The wrong approach can compromise the entire structure of your property.

Here's what we do:
✅ Assess whether the wall is load-bearing
✅ Design the right steel beam or lintel for your specific situation
✅ Produce the structural calculations your building inspector needs
✅ Liaise with your architect or builder throughout

We make the technical side simple so you can focus on the vision.

Aggie only managed to find one stick… but I think she’s more concerned about the structural integrity of the building behind her 👀

“Dad, I want to do some digging… but this looks a little unstable.”

Probably best she leaves this one to the professionals 🏛️🐾

Offices are sitting empty thanks to the rise of working from home - and it’s left a lot of commercial landlords asking the same question… what now?

This project at 8-10 Colston Avenue is a great example of what can happen when you stop seeing an office block for what it was, and start looking at what it could become.

Reclaiming tired commercial space and giving it a new purpose isn’t just good for developers - it’s good for cities too. Empty buildings don’t bring life to a city centre. Smart redevelopment does.

Projects like this are becoming more common as landlords rethink how to make older buildings commercially viable again. And honestly, some of the most interesting projects we work on start with “this building no longer works as intended”.

Grand Central site visits have to be Aggie’s favourite at the moment - although I’m starting to think she’s only in it for the beach walks afterwards. 🌊

Not a bad way to finish a site meeting to be fair. Watching a building with so much history slowly come back to life, then heading straight for the seafront.

Weston might test everyone’s patience sometimes, but projects like this are exactly why places deserve a second chance.
