A sad message from our club secretary Simon G6XHF.
Neil McLaren - G4OAR - 18/11/42 – 24/11/23
It is with great sadness that I report the passing, after a short illness, of WADARC early member and twice past chair Neil (G4OAR).
Neil will be well known, and greatly missed by anyone who has been involved in the club at any time since its formation. He was a club stalwart and I doubt there is anyone in the club, past or present who hasn’t benefitted from Neil’s help, advice, and enthusiasm at some stage.
Until very recently, he rarely missed a club meeting or event and thoroughly enjoyed the fortnightly D&Ws as well as the annual Friedrichshafen Hamfest visits.
He was an enthusiastic member of the Club’s contest team in the early 1980s, especially with National Field Day. He subsequently teamed up with other locals to form the Wirral Contest Group (G4WCG). His involvement with contests was reawakened in recent years with the UKAC. He also enjoyed planning, setting up and operating our club Special event stations such as JOTA, which he supported with his time, equipment loan and operating skills. He was happy to sit and chat with young people on the air, all JOTA weekend, often commenting that their interest in our hobby will not be sparked if no-one talks to them.
Neil was keen on most technologies. He enjoyed building computers and in the days of Packet Radio he was also a prolific operator of that system as well as an accomplished CW operator. His abilities with I.T. were also put to good use as the Club Webmaster. This was a role which he took very seriously, spending hours researching Amateur Radio related articles to include in our pages and updating our site three or four times a week right up until he became ill at the beginning of last month.
Neil appeared to be a life-long confirmed bachelor until August 2013 when he married Win (G1GSJ). Although this prompted a move to Shropshire he maintained his WADARC affiliations and both he and Win were regular club attendees. His Wirral QTH will have been familiar to thousands of locals even with no interest in radio as his 80ft Versatower in the back garden was unmissable when driving past.
Neil was also an accomplished musician and organ player, skier, and bird photographer.
A sad loss to the club.
