🟢 Marine biofuels are scaling quickly.

But fuels such as FAME and HVO don’t behave exactly like traditional fuels.

They can introduce operational challenges including lower lubricity, reduced oxidation stability and increased corrosion risk.

In practical terms, that can mean:
⚠️ Less lubrication for pumps and injectors
⚠️ Fuel degrading more easily during storage
⚠️ Corrosive conditions developing in fuel systems

As biofuel adoption grows, managing these characteristics becomes increasingly important for operators.

A recent independent laboratory evaluation assessed Sulnox Eco™ across the expanded ISO8217 marine fuel standard - covering both conventional marine fuels and biofuels including FAME blends, neat FAME (B100) and HVO.

The results confirmed full compatibility across all fuels tested - and also demonstrated measurable benefits in several biofuel chemistries:
✅ c.28% improvement in lubricity in HVO
✅ 3× improvement in oxidative stability in neat B100 (FAME)
✅ "Technically significant" reduction in steel corrosion in untreated B100

Marine biofuel consumption currently sits around 1–2 million tonnes per year, but industry forecasts suggest this could reach 15–30 million tonnes annually by 2030.

As renewable fuels become a larger part of the marine fuel mix, understanding and managing their operational characteristics will become increasingly important.
