I narrate a lot of e-learning courses – its probably the genre of voiceover I work in the most and I really enjoy it. I always learn things from my scripts.

I’ve narrated courses for all sorts of industry sectors and on many different topics including hospitality, food safety, health and safety, safeguarding and more. This is a video demo about preventing the spread of infection in the workplace.

This week on the Come Here! podcast, we're off to Derbyshire to visit one of England's best loved stately homes.

If you've followed me for a while you'll know that I love working on projects for the heritage sector.
And this also includes projects for heritage-adjacent companies.
Premier Access Scaffolding do amazing work on historic buildings - they were the company responsible for the intricate scaffolding at Lincoln Cathedral, so they know what they're doing!
They were very pleased with the voice over I did for their promotional video - because I know what I'm doing too! 😅

Last year I attended my first AHI Conference (the Association for Heritage Interpretation) and I LOVED it. Tomorrow I'm off to this year's conference, and this time I'm speaking at it!

I'll be talking about using recorded voices in interpretation, and showcasing a couple of case studies where I've recorded people on location for local heritage projects.

Apart from speaking, I'm also looking forward to reconnecting with people I met last time, and making new connections too. There are some site visits as well which will be really fun.

If you have a website, you would be wise to have a video. Google loves video content and tends to rank it highly. 📹

I would also suggest you have a VoiceOver. 👄

You might not feel this is necessary. Perhaps your video is self-explanatory, or maybe you have captions that explain everything without the need for a voice. However, what if the person visiting your site is partially-sighted, or blind? Would they be able to experience or understand your video in the same way? 👀

According to the NHS there are around 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss, but the numbers are increasing, and the RNIB estimate that 4.1 million people will be affected by sight loss by 2050.

People who are dyslexic may find it difficult to read quickly enough to keep up with the video, and as around 10% (6.3 million) of the UK population is dyslexic, (according to the British Dyslexia Association), that’s a lot of people…

Then of course there are people who can’t read. 📖

Shockingly around 7.1 million adults in England have very poor literacy skills (as estimated by the National Literacy Trust). They can understand short texts on familiar topics, but struggle to read information from unfamiliar sources.

There is already a legal requirement for websites produced by the public sector in the UK to be fully accessible, and it seems likely that the law will only become more stringent over time. 💼

In order for your video to be understood by the 15 million plus people in this country who either cannot see well or read well, your video really needs to have sound - as well as captions for people who can't hear. 🔊

My videos generally include me talking to the camera, and I usually add subtitles (though I'll admit I sometimes run out of time....).

Corporate video narration is one of the genres of voice over that I work in the most.

Many companies have videos on their website, or social media to explain or promote their products or services.

Sometimes businesses have video presentations made to show at conferences, or exhibitions, or for a pitch.

I've voiced many of these over the last decade or so that I've been in business.

If you’ve been thinking about a career in voiceover, you might not sure where to start, or what your first steps should be. There is a tonne of information out there and it’s easy to go down rabbit holes and still not find what you need. My simple 30 page guide to getting started in voiceover will set you off on the right track.

I’ve been working as a voiceover artist since 2013 and I am often approached by people who want to be voiceover artists, or who are just starting out in their careers.
