Lionel Messi has reached a preliminary agreement to buy 100% of CD Eldense, a La Liga 2 club based in Elda, near Alicante. It’s his second Spanish club investment this year, following his earlier purchase of Catalan side UE Cornellà.

Real Madrid had just 36% of possession against Inter in yesterday’s Champions League opener, getting outshot 21 to 16. Didn’t matter. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute, Fede Valverde doubled the lead nine minutes later, and Madrid held on for a 2-1 win despite Inter dominating the ball for most of the night.

Yesterday’s Champions League opener between Dortmund and Villarreal had everything. Renato Veiga’s own goal put Dortmund ahead, Villarreal levelled through Santiago Mouriño, and then Serhou Guirassy took over — scoring twice in five second-half minutes to put Dortmund 3-1 up on the night of his 100th Dortmund appearance.

Then, with the game seemingly won, Guirassy somehow turned a deflected free-kick into his own net to make it 3-2 and give Villarreal a nervy finish. Dortmund held on, and Guirassy’s brace made him the club’s second all-time top scorer in Champions League history behind only Marco Reus.

From goalless to unstoppable ⚡

Aston Villa hadn’t scored in three straight Premier League games going into yesterday’s Champions League opener. Then they went to Belgium and put on a show, beating Club Brugge 3-2 with John McGinn and Emi Buendía striking in the first half before Nicolas Jackson capped it off with his first goal for the club, right on the stroke of half-time.

Club Brugge pulled one back from the penalty spot, but Villa held their nerve for a perfect start to their European campaign.
