When you think about straw, construction probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind!
Yet, straw is a renewable, bio-based material that can be used as part of high-performance wall systems, combining thermal efficiency with a significantly lower embodied carbon impact than many conventional construction materials.

As the construction industry looks for ways to reduce emissions, natural materials are being considered more than ever. Sometimes innovation means inventing something new and sometimes it means looking at familiar materials in a completely different way.

Every building has its story.
Its materials, its history, its setting, and the way it has adapted to decades of weather and use all influence how it performs today.

In this clip, Joseph Little explains why respect is one of the key principles of successful retrofit.
Before we decide how to improve a building, we first need to understand it. Because when we assume all buildings behave the same way, we can unintentionally create new problems while trying to solve existing ones!

This clip forms part of our Building Better campaign, exploring how traditional buildings can be upgraded with care, understanding and respect.

Unlike modern construction, older buildings need solutions that carefully balance thermal performance and moisture management.

In certain situations, calcium silicate insulation systems can provide an effective internal insulation solution, helping to improve comfort while reducing the risk of mould and condensation.

They are also non-combustible, making them suitable for projects where fire safety is an important consideration.

Summer is often a good opportunity to catch up on the ideas, discussions and technical topics that can be difficult to fit into a busy working schedule.

Our YouTube channel is home to a growing library of practical and technical content, featuring architects, consultants, building scientists and industry specialists from across the UK and Ireland sharing their knowledge and experience.

Over the past year, we've expanded our content to include both long-form videos and short video clips exploring some of the key themes behind Building Better. Through real projects, technical discussions and practical demonstrations, we aim to share the expertise and lessons learned from those working at the forefront of sustainable construction.

Whether you're interested in retrofit, moisture management, airtightness, low-energy design, sustainable materials or building performance, there is plenty of valuable content available to explore.

And this is only the beginning. More interviews, site visits, technical discussions and practical content are already in development, with plenty more to come over the months ahead.

Keep an eye on the channel and make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss what's next: 👉 https://loom.ly/UvOM7M4

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Ulster Roadshow this week!
It was another great opportunity to bring together professionals from across the construction industry to discuss building performance, low-carbon construction and practical solutions for better buildings.
Thanks to The Terrace Hotel Magherafelt for providing the venue and for looking after us.

A special thank you to our technical team for sharing their knowledge and delivering theses CPD sessions throughout the country. Their expertise and willingness to share practical insights are what make these events so valuable.

Only one more Roadshow to go for 2026, and to finish we're heading to Sligo. The event will be hosted at the new Energy Build Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Construction and Green Skills Training, operated by Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB as part of Sligo College – a fantastic new resource supporting skills development across the construction sector.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Lancaster University architecture students to our Carlisle Training Centre.

It was a fantastic day of practical learning, technical discussions and hands-on activities. The level of engagement throughout the day was excellent, with plenty of thoughtful questions and genuine interest in the topics covered.

We were delighted by the positive feedback received and would like to thank all the students for their enthusiasm and participation throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We wish all the students the very best with their studies and future careers, and we hope to welcome another group through our doors again soon.

A building can look complete. That doesn't mean it's performing as expected.

Understanding heat loss, airtightness, moisture movement and overall building performance requires more than a visual inspection.

Building Performance in Practice is a free event designed to explore how buildings can be assessed in real-world conditions through testing, measurement and practical demonstrations.

Delivered by The Verdancy Group in collaboration with Build Test Solutions and Ecological Building Systems.

EcoCocon - Straw Wall System is changing the conversation around how we build.

Made primarily from straw and timber, these panels combine structure, insulation and airtightness within a single wall system, offering a different approach to low-energy construction. As interest in sustainable building methods continues to grow across the UK and Ireland, EcoCocon is attracting attention from architects, designers, self-builders and developers looking for alternatives to conventional construction.

What surprises most people isn't just that straw can be used in a modern wall system. It's the level of performance, precision manufacturing and the potential to create comfortable, energy-efficient buildings using materials that are largely renewable and sourced from nature.

Join our free online CPD on 24th June to learn how the EcoCocon Straw Wall System works, where it can be used, and why it is generating so much interest across the construction industry.
