Did you know that repeatedly cross-referencing filters can introduce another opportunity for an incorrect interchange?

If you start with the filter currently fitted to a machine, cross-reference that to another brand, and then cross-reference that number again, you can gradually move further away from the specification originally intended for the engine.

With an air or fuel filter that can cause problems. With an engine oil filter, getting the specification wrong could potentially contribute to serious engine damage.

So why do owners of boats, tractors, excavators and other plant & machinery sometimes take a filter number into their local motor factor?

There’s nothing wrong with motor factors — they’re specialists in what they do. Their expertise and cataloguing systems are primarily geared towards automotive applications, where a vehicle registration can often identify the correct parts quickly and accurately.

But a narrowboat isn't a car. An excavator isn't a van. And a tractor isn't a hatchback.

Time and time again, someone comes to our trade counter carrying a filter and asks:

"Can you cross-reference this?"

Our first question is usually:

“What is it actually fitted to?”

And that question can make all the difference.

Recently, a narrowboat owner with a Beta Marine engine brought us an oil-filter reference they'd been given elsewhere. The reference effectively led back to an automotive application — but that doesn't automatically mean it meets the specification required by their particular engine.

Because with an oil filter, screwing onto the engine isn't enough.

Two filters can have the same thread, similar dimensions and even the same sealing diameter while having different internal specifications.

Quality filters aren't expensive... machine failures are.

Over the past week we've been involved in two completely separate investigations that highlight why filtration should never be chosen on price and convenience alone.

In one case, a customer experienced failures across eight Yanmar engines.

In another, a separate customer was faced with replacing a hydraulic pump.

While every mechanical failure has multiple contributing factors, the investigations in both cases identified the filtration used as one of the contributing factors. The filters fitted were from unrecognised, lower-quality brands that raised concerns about whether they were capable of providing the level of protection the equipment required.
