The Panama Canal remains one of the most important shortcuts in global shipping, saving vessels huge amounts of time and distance on key routes.

The Panama Canal Authority says it can save around 3,000 miles on a U.S. East Coast to Japan voyage, and around 5,000 miles on an Ecuador to Europe route.

Because the Canal is so important, the right navigation equipment is essential for certain vessels.

Since 1 October 2023, the Panama Canal Authority has required vessels with a beam of 109 feet (33.22m) or more to have a fixed, non-portable piloting unit with RTK for sub-meter accuracy when transiting the Canal.
