A catalogue is useful when you already know what you need.

It can tell you a glove’s size range, materials, coating and certification, and it can help you compare one product with another.

What it cannot tell you is what happens at a particular workstation on a wet Tuesday morning, how an oily component is held, whether the worker needs fingertip control, or why the current glove is being removed halfway through the task.

Choosing safety gloves takes more than checking a specification. Learn how task, fit, grip, conditions and worker trials lead to better decisions.

It’s always good to see where your support actually goes.

We were delighted to receive this year’s Impact Report from a programme Manosun has helped support, and the results are brilliant.

Their Free School Holiday Camps have made a real difference to children and families, supported by funders and volunteers who have helped make the programme possible.

Even better, the programme has now been shortlisted by the Department for Education as one of the best HAF providers nationally, as well as being named the best provider in the .

For us, supporting local organisations is about more than simply providing funding. It’s about helping good people deliver work that has a genuine impact in the communities around us.

Congratulations to everyone involved. A fantastic achievement.

Two maintenance engineers can need completely different hand protection.

One may be handling sharp sheet material in a clean workshop. The other may be working around oil, restricted access and impact risk on site. The job title is the same; the task is not.

Sector labels and role names help organise a catalogue, but they are a poor substitute for understanding the work.

Start with the application: material, movement, environment, duration and required dexterity. Then select and trial the glove.

The closer the decision gets to the real task, the better it becomes.

'Try these and tell us what you think' is not a glove trial. It is a sample handout.

A useful trial starts with a defined task and a small set of questions. Does the glove control the identified hazard? Can the worker grip and manipulate the item? Does it remain comfortable? Where does it wear? Is it kept on for the full task?

The results should be captured from more than one wearer and, where relevant, more than one shift.

That turns opinion into practical evidence and makes the final decision much easier to defend.

The glove with the lowest unit price is not automatically the lowest-cost choice.

If it wears quickly, loses grip, tears in the same place or is discarded because workers will not wear it, the true cost sits in replacement frequency, downtime and inconsistent protection.

A sensible comparison looks at cost per shift or cost per completed task, not just cost per pair. It also records why gloves are being replaced.

That gives procurement and HSE teams evidence they can use together.

Grip is part of protection.

If a worker has to squeeze harder to control a wet or oily component, the glove is changing how the task is performed. That can reduce control, increase fatigue and make a slip more likely.

The right coating on paper is only the starting point. Grip needs to be assessed against the material, contamination and movement found in the workplace.

A useful trial compares how securely the object can be held, how much effort is needed and whether control remains consistent as the glove becomes used.

Do not test grip in a clean office if the job happens in an oily workshop.

Before Steve looks at a product code, he looks at the work.

Where are the hands positioned?
What touches the palm, fingertips and back of the hand?
Is the surface dry, wet or oily?
How much force is needed?
Is the worker changing grip, slowing down or removing the glove?
Where has the current glove worn first?

Those observations usually tell a clearer story than a list of product features.

More than 20 years in hand protection has taught Steve that the best question is rarely;

'Which glove do you use?'

It is...

'Show me exactly how you do the job.'

Proud to see our Director, Steven, joining the panel for Crossing Paths CIC’s care leavers workshop in South Shields.

Steven shared his own career journey, experiences from industry and some of the lessons he has picked up along the way, while answering questions from the young people in the room.

For us, supporting the next generation is about more than talking about opportunity. It is about giving time, sharing experience and helping young people understand the different routes into work and business.

A big thank you to Crossing Paths for inviting Steven to be part of the day. He thoroughly enjoyed it.

A sharp component may also be oily. An impact task may also take place outdoors in the cold. A heat-resistant glove may still need enough grip to control the object safely.

The obvious hazard is not always the whole job.

Before recommending hand protection, we break the task down: what can injure the hand, what affects control, what changes during the shift and what the worker needs to feel or manipulate.

That fuller picture prevents one risk being solved by creating another.

Manosun’s first order was a full container of specialist safety gloves worth around £40,000.

It travelled from the Far East, reached the UK...and was broken into before the stock reached Manosun.

Months later, Steve received an unusual enquiry from someone looking for one of the gloves in a different size.

There was just one problem: the glove had never officially been released onto the market.

The stolen stock had travelled from the south of England and was being sold from the backs of vans for just £1 a pair.

That raises some uncomfortable questions. Where did buyers think specialist safety gloves had come from at that price? Were they suitable for the task? Did they fit the people expected to wear them?

The person who contacted Steve clearly needed a different size, yet the business had bought what was available rather than what the wearer required.

That is not clever procurement. When PPE is chosen because it is cheap, without checking its origin, fit or suitability, the saving goes to the buyer and the risk goes to the worker.
