Friends of Limpsfield Common

Friends of Limpsfield Common From Domesday all the way through to the Second World War, Limpsfield Common has played its part in history as it has evolved.

Discover more about the Common’s past and the stories written into its landscape. There are over 200 people who have become a Friend of Limpsfield Common. The group of friends was started in 1972 when the National Trust took over responsibility for the Common. Donations from Friends generate around £3000 a year. The Local Committee consults with the National Trust Lead Ranger responsible for the C

ommon and decides how to spend this money. Some of the money is used to support the equipment needs of the Task Force of over 40 volunteers that are crucial to the continued management of the Common. The remaining funds are devoted to individual one-off projects.

Another hugely successful open day at the Air Raid Shelters today, Surrey Day 2026.
Our tours were fully booked and visitors were very generous in their donations.
And what fantastic weather too ☀️
Well done to all the Friends of Limpsfield Common volunteers and everyone involved in the day, and in the ongoing work to keep these hidden treasures in tip top condition.
Thanks also to the National Trust for their support, and to our friends at BBC Surrey, Visit Surrey and the Limpsfield Royal British Legion.

Attention birders!
2026 takes place on Saturday, 9 May 2026, inviting birders worldwide to document bird species over 24 hours to support conservation.
Organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, it is the world’s largest single-day birding event, urging participants to submit checklists via eBird.

How to Participate: Count birds for 5-10 minutes, or a whole day, and enter them in eBird or the Merlin Bird ID app.
Results help scientists monitor bird populations and migration patterns.
This year, particular attention is being paid to the Pacific Flyway, focusing on shorebirds.

Results: Follow real-time sightings from over 200 countries on the eBird Global Big Day page.
Everyone is invited to participate, whether from their back garden, local park, or favourite birding spot like Limpsfield Common.

Use the Merlin Bird App on your walks to discover what’s around. We heard the Firecrest (pictured) last week on Limpsfield Chart, which is brilliant news for the common.

Following the huge success of our open days last year, we will once again be opening up the site to visitors for a fun-filled afternoon finding out about what went on in Limpsfield and the surrounding area during WWII.

Our dashing air raid wardens will once again be on hand to bring the air raid shelter experience to life, with stories and demonstrations on what it was like for the Limpsfield school children and their families.

Dates for the open days are as follows and the sessions start at 30 minute intervals – 2, 2.30, 3 and 3.30pm:

Saturday 9 May – Surrey Day, 2-4PM
Sunday 19 July – Summer Open Day, 2-4PM

Please reserve your place via our eventbrite listing here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/2026-air-raid-shelters-open-days-may-and-july-tickets-1983266162480

Tickets are FREE of course, but should be reserved in advance. We would appreciate cash donations on the day. It all goes towards keeping the air raid shelters and surrounding area in tip top condition!

This year we are working in conjunction with the Royal British Legion Club at Grub Street, which of course also played a very important role in WW2 and has some great wartime memorabilia – as well as coffee, teas, drinks and snacks!
So please make sure you visit them as well on the day – and the rest of the year too! Members and non-members always welcome.

A quick update regarding the burnt-out car left in the “bunny patch” just beyond the National Trust Car Park New Road Limpsfield Common.
The vehicle appeared on the evening of Saturday 18 April, and we are not yet certain how or why it came to be there.
If anyone has any information, please contact the police quoting reference SYP-20260419-0135.
Due to necessary procedures involving the police, fire service and insurers, removal will take some time. The situation is further complicated as the car is foreign registered.
In the meantime, please be patient and do not approach the vehicle, which has been safely cordoned off.
Thank you.
