Small actuator. Important job.

The Belimo CM24-L Damper Actuator is a compact rotary actuator designed for dependable open/close damper control across HVAC and ventilation applications.

Why should the fan never start until the dampers are open? 👇

Inside an AHU, dampers aren't simply there to open and close an airflow path, they're an important part of how the entire system operates.

Take the supply and return isolation dampers.

When the AHU is switched off, their role is to isolate the unit from the ductwork. When the system is required to operate, the dampers need to form part of the startup sequence before the fan is allowed to run.

And isolation dampers are only one part of the picture.

Depending on the AHU configuration, you may also find:
🔹Fresh air dampers controlling outdoor air entering the unit
🔹Exhaust dampers controlling stale air leaving the building
🔹Mixing dampers allowing return air to recirculate into the supply air path
🔹Face & bypass dampers controlling whether air travels through or around the heat recovery section
🔹Backdraft dampers preventing reverse airflow through fans that aren't operating

Together, these components determine where air comes from, where it goes and how it moves through the AHU.

That's why the sequencing matters.

If dampers aren't controlled correctly, the result can be poor airflow, wasted energy, failed startup sequences, damaged coils and wider control issues.

Dampers aren't just accessories, they're part of the control strategy.

What do AHU dampers actually do?

They might look like a relatively simple part of an Air Handling Unit, but dampers play a critical role in how airflow is controlled, balanced and safely managed throughout the system.

In our latest educational video, we're breaking down the different dampers you may find within an AHU, including:

🔹 Supply & return isolation dampers
🔹 Fresh air & exhaust dampers
🔹 Mixing dampers
🔹 Face & bypass dampers
🔹 Fan backdraft dampers

Each has a different job — from controlling how much outside air enters the AHU and managing recirculation, to directing airflow through heat recovery equipment and preventing reverse airflow through inactive fans.

But the important part isn't simply having the right dampers.
It's controlling them correctly.

Poor damper sequencing can contribute to airflow problems, unnecessary energy consumption, failed startup sequences, coil damage and wider control issues.
And that's exactly where we're heading next...
