Poor airflow can have a major impact on livestock health, comfort and performance — but understanding what’s happening inside your shed is easier than you might think.

Galebreaker’s Advisory Service helps farmers improve building performance through ventilation assessments, THI monitoring and practical on-farm recommendations. Smoke testing is one of the most effective ways to visualise airflow and identify problem areas.

Find out how better airflow could improve conditions for your livestock.

Last weeks’ heat wave in numbers from a cow perspective!

Severe heat stress was an obvious problem over the BH weekend and deep into last week lasting well into Thursday/Friday in the Midlands and south (Scotland escaped the worst but we still saw on-farm issues in SW Scotland). The extreme heat load on cows came Saturday to Tuesday and is captured here with daily average THI levels on Mon/Tues into the 70’s and Tuesday seeing average 24hr THI 71-75 in England and Wales - that’s 24-27°C av. temp and remember that literally one week earlier it was averaging 13-15°C…

Many cows will have spent excess time at drinkers to consume water and cool via the air above the water as well as high respiration rates (above 60bpm and certainly 80-120bpm were being seen) and changes to feeding patterns as they looked to eat overnight in cooler temperatures. There will certainly have been impacts on conception rates last week so monitor that in weeks to come!

When temperatures rise, heat stress can quickly impact cow comfort, performance and overall herd health.

Galebreaker’s VentTube Cool system is designed to help reduce the build-up of heat and humidity inside cattle buildings by delivering fresh air exactly where it’s needed.

Unlike traditional circulation fans that simply move stale air around the shed, VentTube Cool uses an external fan to draw fresh air into the building and distribute it evenly across cubicles and open-plan pens.

✔️ Introduces clean, fresh air into the shed
✔️ Helps reduce the effects of heat stress
✔️ Provides consistent airflow along the full length of the building
✔️ Designed to cool more cows more effectively than standard fan systems

The tubular design creates an even cooling effect across the housing area — not just for cows standing nearest a fan.

A smarter approach to livestock ventilation and summer herd comfort.

We’re excited to be attending and sponsoring the National Youngstock Conference 2026 on 15th July at the National Conference Centre.

The event brings together farmers, vets, and industry professionals to discuss the latest thinking around calf health, youngstock performance, housing, and welfare.

The Galebreaker team will be there to talk all things:
✔ Youngstock housing
✔ Ventilation and airflow
✔ Heat stress management
✔ Animal welfare consultations

Animal Welfare Specialist Chloe Rodriguez will be giving a talk on “Welfare, Growth, and Profit: Making the Case for Optimum Calf Housing”- not to be missed!

Sometimes averages don’t tell the full story. In a week which started with daily 24hr average temps of 13°C (THI 56) in the south of England and Wales ended on Sunday with daily average temps of 23°C (THI 68) and 21°C (THI 66) in those two regions.

The highs were extreme too as we saw 35.3°C recorded on Sunday in Dorset (THI 83!!) and yesterday (BH Monday) saw the south, Midlands and north plus Wales all have sheds at 31-33°C (THI 80-82) and it is the extreme swing in conditions, without the chance for cows to acclimate, which is the biggest challenge in reality.

The THI 67+ data is also interesting - if we solely look at the days Fri/Sat/Sun when the heat hit then suddenly the south of England sees 60% of hours above this level (when standing and lying times alter), Midlands 53% and Wales 46% so challenging for cows to try to cool.

Last week epitomises the challenges of heat stress in the UK as things change quickly so proactivity is key! A heat stress assessment highlights issues so get in touch! 🐄☀️

Heat stress can have a major impact on dairy herd fertility — often before visible signs appear.
As Temperature Humidity Index (THI) levels rise, cows can experience reduced oestrus expression, lower conception rates, and longer calving intervals. Even periods of moderate heat stress during the summer months can affect overall herd performance and productivity.
Dry cows are equally important to monitor. Research continues to show that improving environmental conditions during the dry period can positively influence future milk yield, transition success, and calf health.
Monitoring shed conditions early allows farmers to take proactive steps before heat stress becomes a bigger challenge.

Set your own temperature and humidity thresholds and get:
Automatic alerts when conditions exceed safe levels

That means:
✔ Faster response to rising heat stress risk
✔ Reduced impact on livestock
✔ Greater peace of mind

No constant checking. Just the information you need, when you need it.

Ask us how alerts can be set up for your system.

Beat heat stress before it impacts herd performance.

Our THI monitoring system gives farmers the tools to stay ahead of rising temperatures with real-time insight into shed conditions.

With a THI sensor, you can:
✔ Monitor temperature and humidity in housed environments
✔ Access live data via THI-Live
✔ Review monthly heat map reports
✔ Understand how conditions may impact fertility, lameness, and milk yield

It’s a simple, practical way to move from reacting to heat stress — to preventing it.
