Aerial photography and digital elevation models have traditionally been expensive to capture using traditional surveying techniques. Now areas from up to 10km2 can be mapped in a single flight depending on image resolution and flight altitude. A recent project started in Magherafelt Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The A31 Magherafelt Bypass will when finished alleviate the desperate traffic congestion the town of Magherafelt suffers daily. BAM/FP McCann are the main contractor responsible for delivering the project. Aquila UAS Ltd carried out an aerial survey of the site capturing almost 3000 individual images to create a 3D topo survey for the earthworks cut/fill and from the resultant model this animated flyover was produced. During our typical Irish summer weather, conditions have not been favourable for earthworks operations however this short video captures the progress currently onsite with over 150,000 cubic metres of soils & rock being excavated and placed so far.
