Experience comes with time and practical use, but I feel many have forgotten this. I learnt to dive at 18 and did a commanders training course for SCBA at Morton in the Marsh when I was 25, because I'm passionate about safety.

When I look at any PPE, I want to know how and why it works, because then the physics makes sense of it all. Understanding this helps create better training courses, making it safer to use and even stay calm when events take place. To that end I do the same with my staff and children, to inspire passion by explaining how and why, this old picture shows my son, bottom left, at 10 metres deep taken by myself snorkelling down to his class doing their practical assessment. At 16 I put him through his Scott SCBA technician training which he passed, although he couldn't actually touch a set until he was 18! At Ashfield Products Ltd t/a Ash Safety we still inspire the same passions for every aspect of PPE, through training courses and genuine client advice based on experience and understanding. That's what makes us different.

AN ETHICAL QUESTION? We are seeing more manufacturers looking to increase user weight for their Height Safety PPE from 140kgs upwards, are we really taking users safety into account, looking for increased sales or just offering it because someone else has?

I ask this because increasing the user weight will alter many aspects of what we are doing. Legacy anchors may only be rated for users of up to 100kgs and even some new units may only be that. Then there's the instructions that will start applying numerous changes dependent upon user weight, like 140kg for FF, Fall Factor 0 and 1 but only 100kg for FF 2. Then we have the opposite end that also gets effected, the minimum user weight may increase upwards from 60kgs. Your height safety training should be covering all of this, but is it? I see more than enough people that don't even realise what FF's are or understand where they can and can't attach to on their harness for the protection equipment they are using.

Day 697 and I was out on the small boat fishing, the weather was fantastic and that made up for not catching anything other than some very tiny po***ck. The rocking and having to balance on my seat makes great rehab exercises too. Getting on and off is a completely different issue!

Training is just the beginning of the story, this should be delivered by a competent person that can answer the questions posed to them through industry knowledge and use, for the training being delivered.

Ashfield Products Ltd t/a Ash Safety pride ourselves on offering exceptional training for all of the disciplines we cover. Our courses will often go into more depth than others, because we've always felt that knowledge and understanding is what delivers increased safety. All of our courses provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the candidate is competent at the end providing they have achieved the required marks. Training isn't a right of passage, the you've turned up so you get a certificate, it's a validation that the candidate has taken on board the understanding of what is required of them. This is verified by our Ofqual qualified assessor's who evaluate candidates demonstrating their skills through practical and written assessments.

Ashfield Products Ltd t/a Ash Safety design and manufacture products, , confined space entry and goods lifting, for entry & lifting and the manhole protection system.

All of these products are designed and tested in house, with some being also tested again by independent test houses, so they conform to the required legislation. Each product is machined using our own VMC and turning centres and then hand built and verified by a secondary checker to ensure that our quality is right every time. This is what's shown in our picture with our technician turning parts into a fully assembled Gridlock© Manhole Protection System. To help lessen our environmental impact, all of our manufacturing was moved from sources all over the world to now mainly being performed right here in Devon. Much of this is produced in our own machine shop and this also enables us to ensure our quality within production.

Every harness, no matter the manufacturer has attachment points and each of these points have an EN designations that defines their use. If you don't know this, it's because you haven't been trained so shouldn't be wearing it!

The PPE regulations are very clear, if your RAMS have determined that you need to use PPE because there is no other way of mitigating the hazard;

✔️ You must provide the appropriate PPE for the Task.

✔️ Ensure that it is serviced and maintained as the manufacturer instructs.

✔️ Provide training so the wearer uses it as intended to meet it's purpose.

❌ Just buying a harness kit doesn't fulfil our obligation.

❌ No training means you shouldn't be using it.

❌ If you don't do everything you are in breach of the Regulations.

Safety isn't putting on a show, or ticking a box without understanding everything else that needs to be done too.

✔️ Take safety seriously and ensure your workforce are genuinely safe.

There is one part stated in this that's wrong so don't use it in your AI or it will prove you are just after a sale and don't care about the user.

Day 688 and I'm beginning to walk a bit without my sticks again and there definitely is an improvement as I'm now walking with what the physio calls a soft knee most of the time on my right hand side.

Before this my right leg invariably locked straight when walking and that kicked me of to the left when I walked, so found I was walking with a limp that made it look like my right leg was longer than my left. It still happens a bit, but not anything like as much and now I'm managing on a good day to get up and down our stairs at home. This has meant I can use our cross trainer and that's much better than the bike because it makes me use my legs standing up rather than peddling sat down. They are both good, but the cross trainer should be better at building the muscles where I need them, so I will be able to walk longer distances. Have a great day everyone, mine will be spent trying to do all of the exercises my physio has developed for me. 😉

We've just had a client drop in equipment that had been bought for confined space entry, these were the pictures I could get, the tripod isn't tested, the goods winch wasn't CE and the PFL had the deceleration pack zip tied.

There was also a Green SRL, no picture sorry, that again had no labelling that would make it safe to use. All of these items were a clear breach of the safety standards that are required for PPE. The Antec PFL was exactly was a tested product as far as labelling, but who ever inspected it had cut the heat shrink and then zip tied the deceleration pack back up. Now there may be people out there that would say that I'm being pedantic as this equipment would make the entry team safer. Is that really the case? If you fell and the tripod head split from the impact force allowing you to fall to be injured or perhaps even die, it's way too late when that happens and that's why we have testing standards we do.

If your RAMS determine that you need to use PPE, do you think it's sufficient to have just supplied the cheapest option?

As with everything, this will only really be answered after an incident has taken place. But using a PFL, Personal Fall Limiter would have ensured that possible life changing injuries or even death would have been prevented for this scenario. Give us a call and we will explain exactly what you need for your specific task.
