Day 688 and I'm beginning to walk a bit without my sticks again and there definitely is an improvement as I'm now walking with what the physio calls a soft knee most of the time on my right hand side.

Before this my right leg invariably locked straight when walking and that kicked me of to the left when I walked, so found I was walking with a limp that made it look like my right leg was longer than my left. It still happens a bit, but not anything like as much and now I'm managing on a good day to get up and down our stairs at home. This has meant I can use our cross trainer and that's much better than the bike because it makes me use my legs standing up rather than peddling sat down. They are both good, but the cross trainer should be better at building the muscles where I need them, so I will be able to walk longer distances. Have a great day everyone, mine will be spent trying to do all of the exercises my physio has developed for me. 😉

We've just had a client drop in equipment that had been bought for confined space entry, these were the pictures I could get, the tripod isn't tested, the goods winch wasn't CE and the PFL had the deceleration pack zip tied.

There was also a Green SRL, no picture sorry, that again had no labelling that would make it safe to use. All of these items were a clear breach of the safety standards that are required for PPE. The Antec PFL was exactly was a tested product as far as labelling, but who ever inspected it had cut the heat shrink and then zip tied the deceleration pack back up. Now there may be people out there that would say that I'm being pedantic as this equipment would make the entry team safer. Is that really the case? If you fell and the tripod head split from the impact force allowing you to fall to be injured or perhaps even die, it's way too late when that happens and that's why we have testing standards we do.

If your RAMS determine that you need to use PPE, do you think it's sufficient to have just supplied the cheapest option?

As with everything, this will only really be answered after an incident has taken place. But using a PFL, Personal Fall Limiter would have ensured that possible life changing injuries or even death would have been prevented for this scenario. Give us a call and we will explain exactly what you need for your specific task.

Do you have a tripod that uses a leg restraint, chain or strap? Do you realise that almost all of them need the strap or chain to be used to fulfil their certification, that introduces a trip hazard! So, how was that RAMS arrived at?

Whilst there are some exceptions to the rule like the Sala / 3M P-T7 where using the chain is optional, most aren't. Your anchorage positions may also limit it's uses to only doing NC2 entries, where it's a sole entrant that always remains attached to the fall arrest retrieve wire, with their primary means of entry being a ladder or the foot irons. Our ensures that all of these issues are dealt with, so your RAMS will be fit for purpose every time. From straight forward NC2 entries right up to full rescue scenarios, using what ever method of extraction your RAMS you led you to select. Confined space entry has more than enough risks, don't compromise their safety by your tripod selection.

Ashfield Products Ltd t/a Ash Safety truly believes that if we make anything, it should be the best and last the test of time, probably because I don't believe in being part of a throw away society that costs our environment.

The products that we manufacture are from materials we source in the UK, but where ever possible from Devon, when the time comes recyclable. Yes, I do realise that some of these raw materials may come from outside of the UK, like the aluminium ingots used to cast our load arrestor casings, but they are cast here in Devon. That supports our local economy, jobs and environment along with manufacturing many internal parts in our own machine shop using electricity from our own solar array. Then there's the benefit of having technical staff who fully understand how they work and why what we make will perform where others may not. So, when you look at your next purchase, of a Load Arrestor, Manhole Protection System or Tripod, what are the questions you ask that lead you to your decision?

Quality?

Longevity?

Or simply which ever is the cheapest?

There are many things that are said regarding SRL's, Self Retracting Lifelines, but the one thing that is known is that they definitely require servicing even if you have one of those that states it doesn't!

All of these SRL's had issues that a visual check may not have detected and all boils down to the need for a detailed and thorough examination. This is because there are so many parts that can cease to operate correctly from a variety of circumstances, use, storage, weather and even over zealous function checks. Servicing many different manufacturers SRL's has taught us that what takes place inside may not be what you believe from an external appearance. Please don't ignore that your SRL's need to be serviced and ensure that it's done by the manufacturer or one of it's authorised service agents. Otherwise your certification may not be worth the paper it's written on.

I'm proud to be British and that my Company manufacturers PPE and goods lifting equipment right here in Devon, what I'm not happy about is why we get ripped off by the very organisations we belong to like BSi!!!!! 😡 😡

I wanted a copy of the latest EN 17235:2024 standards for permanent anchor devices and safety hooks. Great we are a member of BSi, British Standards Institute for which we have to pay a membership fee every year. That allows us to access all of the documents that we discuss and talk about at the BSiF Height Safety Group and as a member we get a 50% discount when we need to buy any standards, all sounds great doesn't it? BUT HERE'S THE ABUSE! EN 17235:2024 BSi price £ 306.00 -50% = £ 153.00, but from EVS who I have no affiliation with at all and are based in Estonia it's € 22.00 that's £ 19.04 at todays exchange rate. Talk about being abused be the very people who are supposed to be ensuring safety for the UK. What does anyone else think about this?

Ash Safety, because every life matters and ensuring you know those rules cost more if you're a BSi member than if you're not?
