It was brilliant to spend the day among the people shaping the future of Scotland’s built environment, from developers and contractors to fellow consultants and clients.
There was a real focus on building smarter and more efficiently, and on how much earlier collaboration between design teams and contractors can save time, cost and headaches further down the line. It’s something we see on our own projects every day, and it was good to hear it echoed across the industry.
Conversations like these remind us why getting the building services right from day one matters so much. Good M&E and lighting design isn’t just about compliance, it’s about creating spaces that genuinely work for the people who use them.

I𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 🏗️Our team has been visiting London clients to check in on ongoing projects, walk through progress on site and catch up face to face.Good building services design doesn’t stop at the drawings. Seeing a project in person helps us confirm the design is being installed as intended, spot potential coordination issues early and answer questions from the site team before they turn into delays. 𝐌&𝐄 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 🎾

While the courts might be the main attraction, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes to make a facility like this safe, functional and ready for everyday use.
SDC delivered a range of electrical and fire detection services across the facility, including:
• Emergency lighting and spotlights across the back of house and padel concourse�• Small power throughout the facility, including perimeter and cleaner’s sockets�• Fire detection, including smoke detectors in back of house areas and beam detectors across the open padel concourse�• Integration of the fire detection system with the main fire alarm panel at the front entrance
The open nature and scale of the padel concourse required a considered approach to fire detection, with beam detectors providing suitable coverage across the space.
Another example of how effective M&E design and coordination plays an important role in the delivery of modern leisure facilities.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 | 𝐁𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐭 📢

We’re taking a closer look at our work on the Buchanan Gate office fit out, where SDC has completed the full M&E design through to Stage 5.
Led by Luke Lamont and Craig MacKenzie, the project has involved close collaboration between the SDC team and contractors BMES and GM Projects throughout the design and delivery process.
For SDC, successful M&E design is about more than producing drawings. Working closely with the wider project team ensures the design is practical, coordinated and suitable for delivery on site, while responding to the requirements of the finished space.
This project has been a great example of collaborative working, with the SDC team supporting the project through the detailed design process and working alongside the contractors to help bring the M&E strategy into the finished office environment.

Our team has been working on the Cat B fit-out of a new retail unit, ahead of Burger King moving in.
With the opening date driving the programme, the full building services design had to be completed in just two weeks. Kitchen extract, ventilation, power and lighting all had to be right first time to keep the fit-out on track.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞, 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 ☁️

When a home is covered in pink arches and inspired by Miami Art Deco, you know the design brief isn't going to be standard.
The Cloud House, designed by Peter Morris Architects, has been nearly a decade in the making, and last week it featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs. Behind the scenes, SDC was responsible for part of the design, making sure a home this bold performs just as well as it looks. Great building services should be invisible. You shouldn't notice them, you should just feel the comfort. That's exactly what we aimed for here.
Proud to have played our part and it was fantastic to see the finished home on screen 📺

This project is now nearing completion, with the M&E works progressing through the final stages on site.
Aircraft hangars are very different environments to work within. The scale of the space, specialist operational requirements and coordination of multiple building services all need to be considered throughout the design and delivery process.
For SDC, projects like this are about making sure the M&E strategy works effectively within the wider building and meets the practical requirements of the end user.
It’s been great to see this project progress from the earlier stages through to the final installation, and we’re looking forward to sharing more once the hangar is fully complete.

𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ✈️

Their size, high ceilings and often poor thermal performance can make heating these spaces efficiently difficult, particularly when looking at ways to reduce carbon emissions.
SDC recently carried out a feasibility study across hangars used by airlines and aircraft manufacturers, looking at a combination of heat pumps and a Sintra air propulsion system as a potential approach.
The work helped assess what could be realistically achieved within these complex operational environments, while considering both heating performance and longer term decarbonisation.
It’s a good example of where getting the M&E strategy right early can help shape what is achievable further down the line.
