Septic tanks serve properties which are not connected to the main sewage system.
They require regular emptying to remove the build of solids.
How often can vary depending on the size of the tank & the amount of waste going in to it.
Waste comes from the property & enters the tank via the tank inlet, the solids drop to the bottom of the tank & the waste water sits above the solids & will flow out of the outlet of the tank to a soakaway or a burn/stream.
Over time the solids will build up & this is why tanks do need emptied, to enable them to keep working correctly.
If they aren't, this can cause blockages.
