𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻

Humankind is well known for mapping the surface of the ocean, yet the majority of what lies beneath remains a mystery. Until now.

Seabed 2030 is a collaborative international project created by The Nippon Foundation (日本財団) and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO). Their ambitious goal is to map 100% of the ocean floor by 2030.

To help reach this target, they partnered with data providers, like The International SeaKeepers Society, in 2022 to act as an official collaborating partner. Together, they are bridging the gap between private vessels and scientists by recruiting superyachts to collect data in the remote regions that they are uniquely positioned to visit.

This partnership is already seeing incredible results. In April this year, Seabed 2030 announced that 28.7% of the world's ocean floor has now been mapped. For the bridge, this means more accurate bathymetric data, ensuring the safety of guests and crew while exploring the most far-flung and exotic corners of the earth.

In this clip, Master Mariner Captain George Mills explains that while private yachts are exempt from certain parts of the convention, Chapter 5 (Safety of Navigation) applies across the board. Whether a yacht is private or commercial, if it is over 24 metres in length, it must comply with these essential safety standards.
