The Power of Accurate P&IDs & Digital Scanning

📌 Accurate P&IDs are the foundation of any efficient plant operation.
We recently completed a full survey and redraw of an entire plant’s P&IDs for a leading healthcare manufacturer. Their old drawings were outdated, incomplete, and never fully reflected the real installation. This was a challenge—especially since they needed precise documentation to support a major control system upgrade.

To ensure accuracy and efficiency, we used Matterport 3D scanning, capturing 650+ scan points across the facility. This served two key purposes:
🔹 Site documentation – Providing a detailed visual reference for the entire plant
🔹 Remote collaboration – Enabling multiple team members to access and analyze the installation without constant site visits
By combining traditional surveying with digital scanning, we significantly reduced the number of physical site visits while maintaining an unmatched level of accuracy.

✅ What we delivered:
🔹 70+ P&IDs, covering 50 vessels, 10+ filling lines, and all site services
🔹 5,000+ tagged items (valves, instruments, etc.), structured in a smart database
🔹 10,000–15,000 objects mapped for a future-proofed system
🔹 Equipment schedules automatically generated from P&ID data
The result? Accurate, structured documentation that gives the client full control over their plant’s process infrastructure—while saving time and resources in the process.

Our scope included:

With the deadline looming, we took an incremental approach, delivering design elements in stages to keep progress moving while the full design was validated for the final installation.

The result? A seamless coordination process that allowed Delta Engineering Group to move forward efficiently without compromising on accuracy or structural integrity.

We’ve recently been working with a major industrial plant and pressure vessel manufacturer, delivering engineering support for the design of 50+ pressure vessels and heat exchangers—and the number keeps growing.

Our role included:
🔹 Support detail design of vessels and exchangers
🔹 Calculations and technical justifications to support regulatory approvals under PED, PD 5500, and ASME standards
🔹 Design feedback and consultation to streamline manufacturing and reduce build-stage issues

These units are being installed across a range of industrial plant types, including food, beverage, and pharmaceutical facilities. While many are headed to sites across the UK, several are destined for global deployment, each with tailored design packages to meet regional compliance requirements.

🚨 Pipe Stress & Structural Beams – A Hidden Risk in Design 🚨

When designing piping systems, it’s easy to focus solely on the pipe itself. But what about the supporting structure? If thermal expansion forces aren’t properly accounted for, they can overload beams, overstress connections, and cause significant deformations—potentially leading to long-term failures.

The video below is a representative display of what happens when a pipe’s thermal expansion is overly restrained. The resulting forces are transferred to the supporting beam, causing excessive stress and deflection. This is why proper pipe stress analysis is crucial—not just for the piping system, but for the entire structural support.

At Aetherium Engineering, we recently completed a steam system design in collaboration with Design Group, ensuring both the piping and its supports were designed to work together safely and efficiently. This kind of multidisciplinary approach prevents costly issues before they arise.

Engineering, Compliance & Leadership – Lessons from 9 Years at T-Musk by Holmes MIED

One of my fondest career experiences was my time at T-Musk Engineering, later Musk Process Services under the Edwin James Group(now ).

Spending nine years there exposed me to a vast range of projects—everything from simple vessels to entire new plant designs and installations.

This role gave me a deep understanding of:
✅ Translating Operational Needs into Engineering Solutions
Working closely with clients meant I needed to translate operational requirements into technical specifications. Many projects involved bespoke equipment—often with no direct British or International Standard to follow. In these cases, I had to assess fitness for purpose by fully understanding the engineering principles involved.
✅ Navigating Compliance & Risk
I became well-versed in EU Directives and their UK equivalents, such as the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and Machinery Directive. It wasn’t just about making things work—it was about ensuring compliance, reducing operational risk, and protecting both the company and the end client.
✅ Balancing Multiple Projects & Technical Quality
Managing several projects at once became second nature. As I took on increasing responsibility, I found myself ensuring the quality of technical output across the team while balancing my own workload.
✅ The Power of Mentorship & Leadership

One of the most fulfilling aspects was mentoring team members. Over the years, I’ve realized just how much I rely on the skills I developed as Coach and Captain at Trent Rowing Club. What I once saw as a CV filler has become an essential tool—understanding an individual’s psychology to help them drive their own performance.

Now, running Aetherium Engineering, these experiences continue to shape the way I work—ensuring practical, compliant, and well-thought-out designs while helping others grow in their careers.

Engineering at Speed: Lessons from Motorsport by Holmes MIED

One of the most fast-paced and rewarding roles I’ve had was as CAD Technician and later Design Office Manager at Denise Welch Motorsport.
Our job? Reverse-engineering classic car components and developing new, superior versions using modern manufacturing techniques.

This role taught me invaluable lessons that I still apply today:
✅ Understanding Design Intent – Classic components often came to us worn out or from damaged drawings. To rebuild them, we had to get inside the original designer’s head, identifying critical dimensions that weren’t always easy to measure. Today, this skill helps me confidently interpret equipment dimensions during surveys—especially when accurate measurements are difficult to take on large-scale machinery.
✅ Optimizing for Performance – We didn’t just replicate old designs. We used FEA to refine them, reducing weight while improving performance. I also developed new 5-axis CNC machining programs and streamlined manufacturing, sometimes cutting machining times by up to 60% through a deep understanding of tool wear, material cutting geometry, and efficient processes.
✅ Delivering Under Pressure – Supporting Classic Racing Teams meant rapid turnaround was crucial. If a part failed over the weekend, Monday morning started with a redesign. By the next race weekend, the new part was manufactured, fitted, and tested. That ability to act fast, while maintaining quality, is something I carry forward in my work today.
✅ Mentoring and Knowledge Sharing – One of the most rewarding aspects of this role was mentoring others. A standout moment was hearing from an intern whose university tutors praised his parametric design work as some of the best-structured they had ever seen.

Now, running Aetherium Engineering, I still apply these principles: understanding design intent, optimizing performance, responding quickly, and mentoring others.

From Apprentice to Engineering Consultant: The Journey That Shaped Me - by Holmes MIED

Many people know me as the founder of Aetherium Engineering or from my many years working for Musk Process Services(now ), but fewer know where my engineering journey began. My first job was as a Maintenance and Fabrication Apprentice at Lead Ltd.

That role was more than just an introduction to engineering—it was hands-on experience that built the foundation for everything I do today. Alongside technical qualifications, I gained practical skills that I still rely on.

As I progressed, I moved into coordinating technical projects, working with bespoke refinery, casting, and processing equipment—all designed and built in-house. While I transitioned to an office-based role, my background meant I was still closely involved in the production and installation of new equipment.

One of the most rewarding aspects was seeing my college design projects turn into real-world solutions. Some of the casting equipment I worked on is still in use today. That hands-on experience shaped my approach to engineering.

Now, as a consultant designing pressure vessels and fabricated equipment, I still apply the same mindset:
🔹 Would I have been able to make this myself?
If the answer is yes, then I know that skilled fabricators will have no problem bringing it to life.
