01.03.2026: Strait of Hormuz Tensions Disrupt Container Shipping: Multiple Vessels Reverse Course
⏰Maritime traffic patterns around the strategically critical have shifted abruptly after Iran announced the closure of the waterway following recent regional strikes & security warnings. AIS data indicates that several container vessels approaching or preparing to exit the Gulf have executed -turns or halted progress, underscoring the rapidly escalating risk profile in one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors.
Immediate Operational Impact
The following vessels, previously transiting outward from the Gulf, have reversed course:
• 700 TEU Ocean Breeze
• 2,800 TEU CMA CGM San Antonio
• 1,100 TEU Contship Uno
• 2,500 TEU CMA CGM Manaus
• 1,700 TEU CMA CGM Saigon
Additionally, the 2,700 TEU HONG DA XIN 768, which had been inbound toward the Gulf, also turned away prior to entering the HRZ.
Several others that had been on track to exit via Hormuz have instead halted within Gulf waters, apparently awaiting further developments:
• 6,700 TEU EPAMINONDAS
• 1,800 TEU H CYGNUS
Subsequent AIS updates show further precautionary manoeuvres by additional tonnage operating outside the Strait approaches, either stopping or altering routes away from the Gulf:
• 1,900 TEU D QUEENS
• 4,700 TEU MSC MIRA V
• 4,200 TEU Maersk Boston
• 4,600 TEU ZHONG GU KUN MING
• 4,300 TEU NORTHERN GUARD
Risk Environment: Strategic Chokepoint Under Threat
The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 1/5th of the global oil trade & a substantial share of Gulf containerized exports. Any declared closure or credible threat; whether via state action, mines, drones, or interdiction immediately triggers:
•War-risk insurance escalation and potential breach of charterparty safe-port warranties
•Voyage deviations & delays impacting liner schedules , with feeder connectivity
•Naval advisories & convoy considerations
•AIS anomalies or silence in sensitive zones
Even without physical interdiction, perceived risk alone can effectively shut the lane, as operators prioritize crew safety and asset protection.
Suggestion to Masters, Operators, and Owners
Maritime authorities & industry bodies continue to emphasize precautionary measures:
❌Avoid transit through designated HRAs, until clearances are issued.
✅Follow Flag State & naval advisories (including coalition & regional forces)
✅Maintain robust bridge watch & threat reporting protocols
✅ Company must review their SMS to include BMP security protocols & contingency routing plans onboard, with regular Drill Planner for such situations.
✅ Masters must inform Office to confirm P&I and war-risk cover implications before deviation decisions.
The evolving situation demonstrates how geopolitical shocks translate instantly into navigational decisions & fleet-wide disruption.
To all seafarers & operators in or near the region:
Safety first, vigilance always !
