We understand that Design For Manufacture is a vital part of the development of products from a designers vision on CAD to becoming a robust product that can repeatably be manufactured for years to come.

As part of the process, engineers need to consider materials, processes, volumes, and other influencing factors in order to achieve optimal design.

We want to support our customers by offering Design for Manufacture recommendations from the early design phases in order to develop products and processes that are both cost efficient, robust, and repeatable in series production.

We can support with guidance on materials, dimensions, working temperatures and pressures, efficient routings and in line testing specifications.

Our comprehensive engineering team are available to support our customers from initial design concept, throughout the design development phases and into product realisation.

We aim to work with our customers to manufacture the best products possible at a competitive cost.

🌟 Meet Harry – Driving innovation from within at Lander 🌟

Harry joined Lander three years ago as an Engineering Apprentice, embarking on a Level 3 Engineering Technician qualification. Since then, he has continued to develop his skills and play an increasingly important role in our engineering operations.

In December 2024, as part of our strategy to expand our in-house tooling capability, Harry was instrumental in bringing our existing CNC machines into operation and trialling tooling production. His work helped prove that we could successfully manufacture tooling internally, giving us the confidence to invest in a new Hurco 4-axis machining centre.

Today, Harry is manufacturing a wide range of essential tooling, including:
✅ End form tooling
✅ Bend tooling
✅ Bend fixtures
✅ Weld jigs

To support this expansion, Harry has undertaken specialist training with Hurco and developed his expertise in CAM software, further strengthening his toolmaking capabilities.

When asked what he enjoys most, Harry says it's the opportunity to continually learn new skills and create tooling that is used throughout the business. By producing tooling in-house, we're reducing lead times, lowering costs, and decreasing reliance on external toolmakers.

The benefits don't stop there. Increased in-house capability allows us to offer our customers more competitive tooling costs while improving efficiency across our operations.

A fantastic example of how investing in people and technology creates value for both our business and our customers. Well done, Harry! 👏

Nylon: the lightweight alternative to steel and aluminium tube assemblies

As vehicle manufacturers continue to reduce mass across both ICE and electric platforms, every assembly is being reviewed for smarter material choices. Tube assemblies are a prime example: where steel, aluminium and rubber have traditionally been used, formed nylon tube can offer a lighter, durable and production-ready alternative.

The weight saving is significant. In practical terms, for the same material volume, nylon is roughly 85% lighter than steel and around 45% lighter than aluminium.

That matters because lower assembly weight can support improved fuel efficiency, extended battery range, easier handling during installation, and reduced load on surrounding components.

Nylon also brings additional benefits including corrosion resistance, vibration damping, durability and the ability to form complex routing without the same level of secondary processing often associated with metal assemblies.

For applications such as fuel lines, breather pipes and cooling system assemblies, formed nylon tube offers an effective balance of weight, performance and manufacturability — particularly where packaging space is tight and repeatable routing is essential.

At Lander, we can support nylon tube assemblies from rapid prototype development through to high-volume production.

Our CNC plastic bending capability enables fast turnaround of prototype samples, while our oven processes support volume manufacture of cured nylon pipe assemblies.

When the brief is to reduce weight without compromising functionality, nylon is a serious alternative to steel and aluminium tube assemblies.

Strong Joints, Skilled People, Sustainable Manufacturing

When it comes to joining metal components, strength and reliability are essential—but increasingly, so is sustainability.

Whether we're welding, brazing or fabricating complex assemblies, choosing the right joining process doesn't just affect performance; it can also influence material usage, energy consumption and product longevity.

Welding remains a vital process for many applications, particularly larger fabricated assemblies. While modern equipment and automation play an important role, it's easy to overlook the years of training and experience required to become a skilled welder. Producing high-quality, repeatable welds is a craft that takes dedication, precision and practice.

For applications where leak-free performance is critical, brazing can offer significant advantages. Strong, high-integrity joints can help improve product durability and reduce failures in service—extending component life and minimising waste.

At Lander, our in-house brazing facilities in both the UK and USA allow us to control quality while reducing transportation between suppliers and manufacturing stages. By keeping key processes under one roof, we help create more efficient production routes and deliver cost-effective solutions for our customers.

Our specialist aluminium brazing capabilities and automated rotary flame brazing systems also support consistent, repeatable manufacturing, helping to minimise rework and material waste.

Sustainability isn't only about the latest technology—it's about skilled people making smarter manufacturing decisions every day. From selecting the most appropriate joining method to producing durable products that stand the test of time, engineering expertise has a crucial role to play in building a more sustainable future.

After all, the most sustainable component is often the one that performs reliably for years without needing to be replaced.

🚀 What if you could replace multiple welded elbows with precision bends?

For years, large-diameter tube assemblies meant fabrication, multiple welds, long lead times, and higher costs. Every weld added labour, risk, and potential leak paths.

That's no longer the case.

Our investment in the BLM Elect 150 Electric Tube Bending Machine is transforming how large-gauge tube assemblies are manufactured.

✅ Bends tubes up to 6 inches (Ø152mm) in diameter
✅ Handles wall thicknesses up to 3.5mm
✅ Eliminates the need for fabricated joints in many applications
✅ Produces stronger, cleaner, more reliable assemblies

But the real story is the productivity gain.

📈 Output has increased from just 1 part per hour to 15 parts per hour compared with fully fabricated assemblies—a staggering 15x improvement.

And the quality benefits are just as impressive.

By removing most welds, we're removing weak points, leak paths, and variation from the process. The result is:

✔ Stronger parts
✔ Better structural integrity
✔ Improved PPM performance
✔ Lower manufacturing costs
✔ Reduced scrap and energy consumption

Simply put, we're helping customers get better parts, faster turnaround times, and lower total costs.

If you're currently fabricating large-diameter tube assemblies, it may be time to rethink the process.

Prototype samples – your path to better products

We understand the importance of physical samples during the phases of product development. Prototype parts are necessary to prove out designs and functionality of systems.

We opened our dedicated Product Development Centre to support customers with production representative sample parts for multiple different applications.

Our Product Development Centre is manned by skilled engineers who have years of experience in producing prototype parts as near to production standard as possible.

To achieve a high quality of part, we have installed production quality equipment and processes into the Product Development Centre, including a state-of-the-art multi-stack BLM GROUP Smart CNC bending machine for metal pipes, and our world’s first CNC bending machine for nylon tubes.

We have also invested in end forming, drilling, welding, brazing and validation testing processes to ensure that only the highest quality prototype parts are sent to our customers.

The Product Development Team are part of our Engineering department, all lessons learnt from producing the prototype parts are fed directly into our design and NPI teams to ensure smoother flow of products into series production.
