Step by step: How to fit a handle to a long graver 🔨
1. Measure your graver
Place the handle in the palm of your hand and position the graver where it feels most comfortable. The graver shouldn’t extend much further than your index finger.
2. Mark where to cut
Use a pen to mark the point where you’ll cut the graver. Then use a diamond disc or a SuperPike Platinum blade to make a shallow cut around the graver.
3. Secure the graver
Place the graver in a vice, using a piece of leather or cardboard to protect it from scratches. Position the vice as close to your marked line as possible.
4. Split the graver
Using a soft hammer, give the graver a quick, controlled tap to split it along the cut. And just like that — you have two gravers!
5. Fit the handle
Take the graver end and place it back into the vice, upside down. Using a torch, heat the end until it glows red. Quickly push the handle onto the heated graver, keeping it as straight as possible. If needed, gently tap it into place with a hammer.
6. Reshape & polish
To reshape and polish my graver, I used a pumice wheel followed by CeraGloss wheels. There are, of course, different methods you can use depending on your tools and preference.
