Friday afternoon emergency repairs on this fibre network.

At first we were a bit unsure what had happened, then we caught the fury little guys in action. Clearly liking the warmth of the network switch !!

A dairy farm's solar panels kept getting blamed for cutting the power. The solar wasn't the problem.

Running 23 hours a day, this farm couldn't afford downtime, but kept tripping its main RCD on hot days.

We don't like just fixing the immediate problem, we get down to the root cause.

Do it once, do it right!

After measuring the earth leakage on several different submains, we found the issues.

- one single RCD was protecting the entire site and the accumulation of earth leakage was enough to tip it over the edge
- Incorrectly sized earth bonding causing the building steel work to act as the main earth path.

We split it across several RCDs with a custom panel built to fit, added an alarm to notify the team of faults instantly and also added failsafes to the Solar PV system to prevent it from operating when the onsite generator was in use.

The biggest hurdle? Swapping the system out with only one hour a day downtime, we did it through a well thought out plan.

Is your CCTV secure?

As we get closer towards towards winter and Christmas there is often a rise in rural crime. And whilst farms may have CCTV installed, is it really covering the correct areas? and more importantly - is it secure?

We visited a farm this week to investigate their flakey network.

The original installers had used a point to point link to connect the farm office + CCTV to the farmhouse Starlink. A solid solution IF it was setup correctly.

What we found:

- PTP links mounted where farm plant and trees were blocking the signal

- CCTV camera cables clipped direct to buildings to they could be cut easily

- A network switch located in a box next to the cameras, within access from the ground that could be disconnected or cables cut

If anyone was scoping out this location, they could disable the system in seconds without being caught on camera.

Systems need physical protection as well as secure passwords and access arrangements.

There's a big difference between having a system and having one that is secure and effective.

A North Devon school thought their solar inverter had failed. The real problem was a fire risk hiding on the roof.

Fifteen years of weather exposure had burned out live DC connectors on the roof, not the inverter as first thought.

We replaced the cabling and located the new connectors safely under the panels, so no costly new inverter was needed.

The system is generating again, and the school's insurers are happy it's safe.

We've now got a rolling maintenance plan in place for their other four arrays, working within their yearly budgets.

A Devon farm's solar PV install kept reporting faults and nobody knew why.

📝A full survey found five separate issues.

The installation was only two years old, but throwing intermittent faults, and the monitoring data didn't add up.

We surveyed every site before touching anything, and found a string of issues typical when installation work gets sub-contracted out:

❎Wrong cabling
❎WIFI dependent inverters losing signal across the farm
❎Monitoring equipment wrongly configured
❎Two panels damaged
❎faulty DC connectors among them.

✅Everything's now generating and reporting properly, with an ongoing planned maintenance programme in place.

If your commercial Solar PV isn't performing the way it should, it's worth finding out why.

If you've not had it serviced in the past two years, it is definitely something that should be on your agenda.
