✅Better for patients.
👍More confidence for practices.

The Canon Xephilio OCT-R1 combines wide-field OCT and true-colour fundus imaging in a single, rapid scan, delivering detailed diagnostic information while helping reduce the need for multiple, lengthy tests.

For patients, that means a more comfortable, efficient experience. For practices, it means confident imaging, streamlined workflows and greater diagnostic detail.

But don’t just take our word for it; hear directly from one of our customers. 👇

What does the evolution of OCT really mean for clinical practice?

Imaging technology is at its most valuable when it helps clinicians answer clinical questions better.

That’s why the ongoing development of platforms such as the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1 is worth looking at from a clinical perspective.
Rather than simply adding technology for technology’s sake, the focus is on how OCT can provide ophthalmologists with more information to support assessment, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment decisions.

It raises an important question:
How can imaging technology continue to expand its contribution to patient care?

For Canon, that means continually looking beyond what has already been achieved and considering where additional imaging capabilities could deliver meaningful clinical value.

And that evolution isn’t necessarily about one major breakthrough.

Sometimes, it’s about giving clinicians the ability to see more, assess more objectively and bring different aspects of ocular health together.

This report image provides a good example. It combines a 10 × 10 mm Macula 3D OCT scan with a 32MP True Colour Fundus image, showing a patient with diabetic macular oedema and diabetic retinopathy. Together, the structural OCT information and colour fundus view provide complementary perspectives on the retina.

We believe innovation in ophthalmic imaging isn’t just about what the technology can capture. It’s about what that information enables clinicians to see, understand and do.

Seeing retinal pathology from more than one perspective. 👁️

A good example is Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), where OCT can reveal the structural changes associated with the condition, including significant intraretinal fluid and cystoid spaces.

But when assessing retinal pathology, a single view doesn’t always tell the whole story.
The combination of 14.7 mm spectral-domain OCT and 32MP True Colour Fundus photography on the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1 brings together detailed cross-sectional structural information with a clear view of the retinal appearance.

That combination can help clinicians connect what is happening within the retinal layers with what is visible clinically. Providing a more complete picture to support assessment, diagnosis and ongoing monitoring.

It’s another example of how the value of ophthalmic imaging isn’t simply about generating more data.
It’s about bringing the right information together to help clinicians see, understand and assess pathology with greater confidence.

Different views. One clinical picture.

Friday customer feedback 👏

“It is simple, it is fast, and it is accurate. It was a sound investment.”

A great way to finish the week with some feedback from David Cunning at RC Cunning Opticians in Edinburgh.

For David and the team, the Canon Xephilio OCT R1 has delivered more than advanced diagnostic capabilities. Its compact footprint, clinical performance and patient experience make it a valuable investment for their independent practice.

Being able to do more in practice, support clinical decision-making and give patients confidence in the care they receive is exactly what good technology should enable.

Thank you, David, for sharing your experience with us.

Happy Friday from the Sense Medical team!

For us, the service doesn't stop when the equipment arrives.

David Cunning, Practice Owner at RC Cunning Opticians in Edinburgh, talks about his experience working with Sense Medical throughout the process of bringing the Canon Xephilio OCT R1 into the practice.

From the initial planning and finding the right solution for their space, to sourcing a medical-grade monitor, installation, networking and team training, we worked closely with David and his team to make sure everything was set up around the way they wanted to work.

David also highlights something particularly important to us: making sure the whole team feels confident using the technology.

We spent time with each member of the team during installation and training, making sure they understood how the OCT R1 works, so that they felt comfortable using it from day one.

It's always rewarding to hear that this approach makes a difference.

We believe that investing in technology should come with the right level of support before, during and long after installation.

🔧👁️ Keeping your imaging equipment in top condition

Joe was out on site with one of our NHS Diabetic Eye Screening customers for the annual service of their Canon CR-2 AF fundus cameras.

✅Annual servicing helps make sure all movements and functions are working correctly, while giving us the opportunity to clean and inspect the internal and external optics, helping keep the cameras performing reliably for clinical teams.

It’s always great to visit customers we’ve built strong relationships with over the years. We’ve also supported this team with four Canon Xephilio OCT-R1 systems as part of the national OCT rollout, which have been in use since November last year. 🤗

From routine servicing to new equipment installations, Sense Medical is here to support both NHS and private customers throughout the life of their imaging equipment.

Great work, Joe! 👏

Did you know the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1 can look beyond the retina?

The Xephilio OCT-R1 has continued to evolve, expanding its clinical capabilities to support a broader range of ophthalmic applications, including dedicated anterior segment OCT on the same high-resolution platform.

This enables clinicians to capture detailed cross-sectional images of the cornea, iridocorneal angle and anterior chamber, providing valuable additional insight for assessment, diagnosis and ongoing patient management.

From glaucoma assessment and corneal evaluation to surgical planning, the ability to image both the anterior and posterior segments on one platform can help broaden clinical application, support efficient workflows and make complex ocular structures easier to assess and explain to patients.

And that evolution reflects something important about Canon’s approach to OCT.

It’s not simply about adding features. It’s about continually looking at the technology from a clinical perspective - asking how imaging can provide greater insight, support ophthalmologists in making informed decisions, and ultimately contribute to better patient care.

One platform. Broader clinical insight. Continually evolving capability. Get in touch with us if you want to know more about the Canon OCT range.

🎥 Why did RC Cunning Opticians choose the Canon Xephilio OCT R1?

For David Cunning, investing in new technology has always been about one thing: delivering the very best care for patients.

As an early adopter of advanced diagnostic imaging, upgrading to the Canon Xephilio OCT R1 was the natural next step to keep the practice at the forefront of clinical excellence.

In this video, David explains what stood out most:
✔️ Wide 14.7 x 13.4 mm scans that capture more retinal detail in a single acquisition.
✔️ High-resolution OCT and true colour fundus imaging together for exceptional diagnostic confidence.
✔️ A compact, ergonomic design that's ideal for modern independent practices.
✔️ A more comfortable experience for patients with fast, efficient imaging and fewer repeat scans.
✔️ The ability to diagnose and manage more patients in practice, helping reduce unnecessary hospital referrals.

Every practice is different, which is why we worked closely with David and his team to create an installation that complemented their space and workflow, ensuring they could get the very best from their investment from day one.

If you're considering how the right technology could help future-proof your practice while enhancing both clinical confidence and the patient experience, this is well worth a watch.
