This widefield OCT image, captured using the Canon Xephilio OCT-S1, demonstrates retinoschisis in the inferotemporal retina.

Using Swept-Source OCT technology, the OCT-S1 provides an impressive 23mm scan width, allowing clinicians to visualise a much broader area of retinal architecture in a single acquisition.

In this case, the extended field of view clearly demonstrates structural changes outside the central macula, highlighting the value of widefield OCT when assessing retinal pathology that may extend into the peripheral retina.

By providing detailed cross-sectional imaging across a wider field, the OCT-S1 can support a more comprehensive assessment of retinal structure, helping clinicians with diagnosis, monitoring and ongoing patient management.

Wider imaging means greater insight into retinal structure.

👀More behind-the-scenes of us bringing the Canon Xephilio OCT R1 to life in Uganda.

📽️The full footage is being finalised but we have had these images of our Clinical Support Engineer Joe Blamire sent to us.
He was on the ground supporting the installation, commissioning and training of the three Canon Xephilio OCT R1 systems provided by Sense Medical and Canon. From assembling the equipment and configuring the systems to working alongside the clinical team and supporting them in using the OCT. It is great to see the collaboration behind the project.🤗

🧰We also supported the team with practical guidance around basic equipment servicing and maintenance, helping ensure they have the knowledge and confidence to keep the systems working effectively as the project progresses.

The OCT systems will support an ambitious Oculomics study in Uganda investigating the relationships between ocular biomarkers and a range of systemic and ocular health conditions.
And there’s much more to come.
We can't wait to share even more footage from the project, including the team in action and the patient screening activity as it starts.

We’re proud to be playing our part in supporting research that could help unlock new ways of understanding disease and contribute to better health outcomes and greater equity.

This OCT image was captured using the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1 and demonstrates retinal structural changes in a patient with sickle cell disease, including areas of parafoveal retinal thinning.

Using Spectral-Domain OCT technology with a 14.7mm wide scan, the OCT-R1 enables clinicians to assess retinal structure across a broad field in a single acquisition.

The ability to visualise subtle structural changes beyond the immediate central macula can provide valuable insight into the retinal manifestations of systemic disease, supporting diagnosis, monitoring and ongoing patient management.

Another example of how widefield OCT imaging can provide clinicians with a more comprehensive view of retinal health.

We are off to a busy start to the week following EURETINA 2026 in Vienna over the weekend. Our team are now back in the UK after a fantastic few days supporting Canon Medical Systems Europe. 👁️

It was a great opportunity to meet ophthalmologists and clinicians from across the UK and Europe, share the stunning image quality and capabilities of Canon’s ophthalmic diagnostic technology, and have some really interesting conversations around retinal imaging and screening.

It was especially great to see so many familiar faces from the UK and spend time with our customers and colleagues, while also meeting new people from across the European ophthalmology community.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to visit the Canon stand and speak with us.

We’re looking forward to continuing the conversations back here in the UK, and already looking ahead to the next one!

Next stop: Vienna! 👁️

Just two days after an inspiring day at the NEC Health Future of Diabetic Eye Screening Summit, we’re heading to EURETINA 2026 to support our colleagues at Canon Medical.

What a great meeting at the NEC Health Future of Diabetic Eye Screening Summit! 👁️

It was fantastic to connect with so many programme leaders and clinicians and discuss the diabetic eye screening programmes we’re currently supporting with the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1.
We've had some fantastic feedback on both the ease of use and the exceptional image quality teams are experiencing, a great reminder of the difference the right technology can make to everyday screening.

⭐A first look at Sense Medical supporting global eye health in Uganda.⭐
We’re proud to be supporting an important Oculomics research project with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, helping explore how information from the eyes could provide new insights into systemic and ocular disease.

The study is being conducted within the General Population Cohort in Kalungu District, Uganda, combining ocular imaging with wider health data. The longer-term research aims to better understand the relationship between ocular biomarkers and major health conditions, and explore their potential for diagnosis and prediction.

As part of our support, Sense Medical has provided three Canon Xephilio OCT R1 systems for the project. The OCT R1's adaptable laptop-based configuration is particularly suited to a project that needs to bring imaging capability to different locations and communities. The teams are using a range of the OCT R1’s imaging capabilities to capture a comprehensive picture of the eye as part of the study:

✅ Macula OCT
✅ OCTA
✅ Anterior OCT
✅ True Colour Fundus Imaging

Our Clinical Support Engineer Joe Blamire travelled to Uganda (even crossing the equator line) to install and commission the systems, and worked directly with the project team as the equipment was brought into use. Here are a few pictures Joe captured of his time with the team in Uganda.
