So you are building and you know you want timber cladding but you don't know where to start?

There's a hundred and one ways to clad a building in timber but lets start with one of the most basic decisions - off-saw or profiled cladding.

OFF-SAW (or rough sawn) cladding is timber that is cut by a sawmill and has a rough texture and potentially saw marks and other imperfections on it. There's likely to be some slight variation in dimensions and it is usually (but not always) supplied freshly sawn, meaning it is neither air-dried or kiln-dried.

The pros? It has oodles of texture and character, its the cheapest option and it really suits traditional, natural material builds and rustic projects.

How to use it? It is laid out in patterns/styles like board-and-batten, clapboard, board-on-board, featheredge and many more.

PROFILED cladding is timber that has been machined to a specific cross-section, typically that means the boards interlock with a tongue and groove of some kind. There are hundreds of different profiles but most profiled timber is supplied in variations of a few common styles like shadow gap, TG+V etc.

The pros? Crisp lines, contemporary look, smooth surface, consistency... Perfectly suited to modern builds. Virtually always kiln-dried to reduce movement.

How to use it? Boards typically interlock with each other with a tongue and groove or overlap, and you don't need to set out a specific pattern.

Exceptions to the rule? (because there always is!):

- Planed or planed-all-round (PAR) boards are machined boards that have smooth square edges. They are technically 'profiled' but they are set out like off-saw boards.
- Waney edge, or live edge - boards that feature the outside edge of the tree rather than a square cut
- Fine sawn or resawn boards - boards that have been sawn again for various reasons.
- Shingles and shakes - still timber cladding, but used the way slates and tiles and used.
- Really niche cladding styles like riven boards (more on that another time!)

Just arrived - stunning Welsh-grown western red cedar featheredge boards.

Gorgeous light brown colour with yellows and pinks running through it, subtle knots and grain pattern and bonus - it smells incredible!

The featheredge is available in two depths, 150mm or 200mm (6" or 8") and right now the stock is in 3.6m lengths. (4.8m available to order)

Western red cedar is a naturally durable species that doesn't require any additional staining or protection. It can be treated to maintain its colour or allowed to weather to a a silvery grey colour.

Off-saw featheredge has so many advantages - very easy to install, gorgeous texture to the timber, can suit traditional or contemporary builds depending on how you detail it.

It's not talked about much but grain contrast has a big impact on the look of your timber cladding.

Some species of wood have lots, some not a lot - it doesn't mean one is better than the other, but it will impact the look a lot.

My personal take?

If a species doesn't have much: maintain the colour.

If a species has a lot: you can let it silver or keep the colour.

This rough-sawn larch cladding has been slowly mellowing in colour for the past few months and is about to be stained to hold the colour where it is. A few months of patience and you get these gorgeous washed out colours that really suit a coastal setting!

We can now offer Class B fire rated timber, thanks to the amazing team at HALT.

Our first project uses stunning Scottish-grown and milled Douglas fir, and treated by HALT NFR in Belfast using the incredible, BurnBlock fire-retardant treatment.

No more site application of horrible intumescent coatings. Just fire rated timber, direct to site, ready to be used.

This opens up the use of timber in even more situations like commercial properties, cladding near boundary lines and large areas of wall and ceiling cladding.

Even humble rough sawn larch boards can create a laid back contemporary look.

This is a cabin I build a few years back - before I hung up the tools to sell timber!

Larch makes beautiful, durable cladding timber, full of character, while also being affordable.

In this instance it was fitted in a reverse board and batten pattern to create a shadow gap.

Reclaimed floors aren't your only option!

Although beautiful, using reclaimed floorboards means sourcing (in packs big enough), fixing, fitting, refinishing and staining.

On some projects it makes more sense to fit gorgeous brand new floorboards.

Traditonal Douglas fir floorboards aren't trying to mimic a look, they are the look. Douglas fir has been used for floorboards for hundreds of years and it's easy to see why.

🌲 Beautiful colours
🌲 Striking grain
🌲 Long lengths (up to 6m)
🌲 Superb strength-to-weight ratio

Traditional timber floorboards have character and texture and colours and uniqueness that you just can't copy with engineered flooring.

We supply Douglas fir floorboards in a huge range of widths and thicknesses to suit new build and renovation projects.
