Honoring Our Chiefs, Our Ocean, and Our Future
What a truly powerful few days it has been. I had the rare and humbling honour of witnessing a moment of deep cultural and historical significance — the installation of our high chiefs: Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, Sau ni Vanua ko Lau.
To be present for this sacred occasion, on our own yanuyanu (island home), surrounded by our people, our traditions, and the spirit of our ancestors, was a feeling beyond words. It reminded me of who we are — the strength of our vanua, the sacredness of our lotu, and the deep bond we share with our qele and our waitui.
On our last day here, we decided to end our visit the Fijian way — by going fishing. While out at sea, we caught a small turtle — a beautiful creature of the ocean. But in that moment, I knew what I had to do.
I gently returned the turtle back to the ocean. Why? Because of the work we are doing through Bubble Barriers Fiji — a mission to protect our marine environments, reduce plastic pollution, and restore balance to our oceans. This isn’t just a project. It’s a calling. It’s about safeguarding the ecosystems that our people have depended on for generations.
Our oceans are under threat. Plastics are choking our reefs. Marine life is struggling. But we believe that local solutions, grounded in our own values and traditions, can make a difference.
Releasing that turtle was a small act — but symbolic of a much bigger purpose.
Let us not wait for others to save our seas. Let us lead, as kai Viti, with respect for creation, with innovation, and with courage.
For the vanua.
For the waitui.
For our children’s future.
