Honoring Our Chiefs, Our Ocean, and Our Future

What a truly powerful few days it has been. I had the rare and humbling honour of witnessing a moment of deep cultural and historical significance — the installation of our high chiefs: Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, Sau ni Vanua ko Lau.

To be present for this sacred occasion, on our own yanuyanu (island home), surrounded by our people, our traditions, and the spirit of our ancestors, was a feeling beyond words. It reminded me of who we are — the strength of our vanua, the sacredness of our lotu, and the deep bond we share with our qele and our waitui.

On our last day here, we decided to end our visit the Fijian way — by going fishing. While out at sea, we caught a small turtle — a beautiful creature of the ocean. But in that moment, I knew what I had to do.

I gently returned the turtle back to the ocean. Why? Because of the work we are doing through Bubble Barriers Fiji — a mission to protect our marine environments, reduce plastic pollution, and restore balance to our oceans. This isn’t just a project. It’s a calling. It’s about safeguarding the ecosystems that our people have depended on for generations.

Our oceans are under threat. Plastics are choking our reefs. Marine life is struggling. But we believe that local solutions, grounded in our own values and traditions, can make a difference.

Releasing that turtle was a small act — but symbolic of a much bigger purpose.

Let us not wait for others to save our seas. Let us lead, as kai Viti, with respect for creation, with innovation, and with courage.

For the vanua.
For the waitui.
For our children’s future.

🌊 OIL IS SPILLING INTO SUVA HARBOUR — AND WE HAVE A WAY TO HELP.

As a qoliqoli owner and founder of Bubble Barriers Fiji, I’m calling on the Ministry of Transport and MSAF to act now — before the damage to our marine life and reef becomes irreversible.

We’ve already spoken with Joeli Cawaki, and we’ve presented our solution.
We’ve also submitted an MOU, ready to sign.
All we ask is: give us a chance to work with you.

Our Bubble Barrier system, developed locally, is designed to trap oil, plastics, and waste before it spreads — protecting the reef and marine ecosystem.

🛑 The oil from Lomaiviti Princess 2 is now spreading through the harbour, harming our qoliqoli, fish stocks, coral, and seagrass.

Please — to the Ministry of Transport and MSAF:
🖊️ Sign the MOU. Let us help.
We are ready to work together to safeguard our environment.

This is not about politics — this is about protecting our vanua and waitui for the next generation.

This afternoon, we had a productive e-meeting with Mr.Don Natabe former (CEO for FNRL) to discuss the ongoing Tuvatu Mining operations and the concerns of the people of Sabeto. The conversation focused on how Bubble Barriers Fiji, in collaboration with Bubble Barriers NZ, can provide innovative, non-invasive solutions to help protect the surrounding environment—especially water sources—from mining-related pollution.

Meeting participants included:

Don Natabe - Betoraurau Rep (Former CEO FNRL )

Zarn – Bubble Barriers NZ

Adre Smith – Bubble Barriers NZ

Jone Tuinasaqalau – Bubble Barriers Fiji

We look forward to continuing this dialogue and working closely with local communities to ensure sustainable environmental practices are prioritized and respected.

🌍 World Environment Day – Taking Action Together 🌱

Today, our Bubble Barriers Director and his team proudly joined hands with other NGOs and stakeholders for a coastal cleanup, starting from the Maritime Seawall to Vuya.

At 5AM, our representatives Mr. Jone Tuinasaqalau and Ledua Jiujiuwa joined the briefing at Sukana Park before heading out with the team to collect rubbish along the shoreline.

Along the way, we came across a heartbreaking sight—a dead moray eel tangled in a fishing line and trapped inside a plastic bottle. 😔 This is exactly what we’ve been warning the public about.

⚠️ Say NO to plastic.
⚠️ Say NO to harmful waste in our oceans.

We were grateful to be part of this important initiative. The photos below show not only the tragic evidence of marine pollution, but also the huge volume of rubbish we collected—including items from well-known brands like Coca-Cola, FMF, alcohol cans, diapers, and Bongo snack packs.

💚 A big Vinaka Vakalevu to the Ministry of Environment for organizing this meaningful and impactful cleanup event. Your leadership and commitment are making a real difference.

Let’s protect our oceans.
Let’s protect our wildlife.
Let’s protect our future.

The ocean produces more oxygen than all the trees on Earth combined? Tiny marine organisms, primarily phytoplankton, generate 50% to 70% of the oxygen we breathe through photosynthesis. These microscopic life forms quietly power our planet’s atmosphere, creating the oxygen we depend on daily.

Rainforests, including the Amazon, contribute around 28% of Earth's oxygen, but the ocean remains our largest oxygen producer. However, it's not just about oxygen production—marine ecosystems also consume oxygen, creating a delicate balance that sustains life on Earth.
