Main Components of a Cyclone Preheater

Core Components of a Cement Preheater
• Cyclones (Cyclone Separators):
The core heat-exchange units arranged in vertical stages (typically 4 to 6 stages). They use centrifugal force to separate hot gases from the raw meal.
• Connecting Gas Ducts (Riser Pipes):
Conduits connecting the cyclone stages where the raw meal is injected into the fast-flowing upward stream of hot exhaust gas for rapid suspension heat transfer.
• Dip Tubes (Inner Tubes):
Cylindrical immersion tubes extending down into the center of the cyclones to guide the exiting gas flow and improve separation efficiency.
• Precalciner (Calciner):
A combustion chamber located between the lower cyclone stages equipped with fuel burners. It achieves 90% or more raw meal calcination (decarbonation of limestone) before the material enters the rotary kiln.
• Tertiary Air Duct:
A large-diameter duct that channels hot secondary/tertiary air directly from the clinker cooler to the precalciner to supply oxygen for supplementary fuel combustion.
• Lock Air Valves / Flap Valves:
Mechanical sealing devices (like flapper or double-flap valves) at cyclone discharge points that allow downward material flow while preventing false cold air from entering and disrupting the internal draft.
• Meal Chutes and Feeding Pipes:
Gravity-driven channels that transport separated raw meal powder from a higher cyclone stage into the gas duct of the stage below.
• Kiln Inlet Chamber (Smokebox):
The transition section at the bottom connecting the preheater tower to the rotary kiln, capturing hot gases and directing calcined meal into the kiln.
• Preheater ID Fan (Induced Draft Fan):
A high-capacity exhaust fan at the top of the tower that maintains negative pressure and drafts hot kiln gases through all lower cyclone stages.
• Supporting Steel Structure & Refractory Lining:
A tall structural steel tower framework lined internally with high-temperature insulation and refractory/castable bricks to withstand extreme internal operating temperatures (800°C to 1100°C).

Types and Causes
• Thermal Crank:
Caused by uneven circumferential or longitudinal temperatures. Hot spots (from lost refractory bricks or flame impingement) make one side of the shell expand more than the other. Uncontrolled shutdowns (stopping a hot kiln without using the auxiliary/inching drive) also cause the stationary shell to sag.
• Mechanical Crank:
Caused by permanent plastic deformation or distortion of the steel shell, supporting tires (riding rings), or mechanical misalignment.
