Particulate vs Coalescing Filters

Particulate Filters
Particulate filters remove solid particles from a liquid or a gas. The size of the particle’s removed depends on the grade of the filter, with filter grades running from .01 micron up to 200 micron. Particulate filters work from the outside in. The unclean liquid or gas flows into the filter, and then the clean liquid or gas emerges. The filter inside is honeycomb shaped and traps the unwanted particles while releasing the cleaned product.

Coalescing Filters
Coalescing filters are used to separate liquids and gases out from one another and into separate units. Some examples include water/gas, gas/oil, or fuel/gas that need to be separated either for purification or for commercialization.

Bubble Point Curve—the curve that separates the pure liquid (oil) phase from the two-phase (natural gas and oil) region. This means that at a given temperature, when pressure decreases and below the bubble point curve, gas will be emitted from the liquid phase to the two-phase region.

Dew Point Curve—the curve that separates the pure gas phase from the two-phase region. It is the connected points of pressure and temperature at which the first liquid droplet is formed out of the gas phase.

What is the dew point ?

The dew point is the temperature to which air must be cooled to become saturated with water v***r, assuming constant air pressure and water content. When cooled below the dew point, moisture capacity is reduced and airborne water v***r will condense to form liquid water known as dew. When this occurs via contact with a colder surface, dew will form on that surface.

Devices called hygrometers are used to measure dew point over a wide range of temperatures. These devices consist of a polished metal mirror which is cooled as air is passed over it. The temperature at which dew forms is, by definition, the dew point. Manual devices of this sort can be used to calibrate other types of humidity sensors, and automatic sensors may be used in a control loop with a humidifier or dehumidifier to control the dew point of the air in a building or in a smaller space for a manufacturing process.

What is a sample probe Wake Frequency Calculation?

A Wake Frequency Calculation is used to determine or prove the required dimensions and suitability of a sample probe based on the process conditions. The fluid will form a wake, known as a “Von Karman Trail”.

The wake has a specific frequency, which is a function of the diameter of the thermowell and the fluid velocity. If the wake frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the sample probe , the well will vibrate and it leads to destruction.

Sample Pre-Conditioning or Conditioning System (SCS) can be necessary to cool the sample, heat up, reduce or boost the pressure or to v***rise from liquid to gas.



Reasons to use a SCS can be:

Get lowest lag time and best analyser results
Very high pressure or temperature
Filtration as soon as possible
Create fastloop/bypass circulation systems
Very hazardous sample
Low pressure or temperature
Minimising the sample (gas)volume
Faster response if v***rize liquid sample first to gas.
