☀️ Turning Roll-to-Roll Perovskite Experiments Into Real-World Data ☀️

We recently welcomed PhD Researcher Mae Xerzel Ouano and Prof. Dr. Sebastien Lizin from Hasselt University as part of the LUMINOSITY_EU project.

Over two intensive days, primary data was collected during roll-to-roll processing of perovskite solar cell stacks, covering material consumption, electricity, gas and auxiliary processes, as well as outputs and losses.

This data is an important building block for the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) being developed within LUMINOSITY, helping create a more accurate picture of what it takes to scale perovskite solar technology towards industrial production.

We also sat down with Max and Sebastian for a video podcast to discuss the methodology behind collecting this data and why it matters for understanding the real-world potential of perovskite solar.

How to know the final coating thickness before coating has even started? 🤔

With slot-die coating, you can calculate the wet film thickness in advance. It comes down to three key parameters: flow rate, coating width, and web speed.

Increase the flow rate, and the coating gets thicker. Increase the web speed, and it gets thinner. Simple, predictable, and highly controllable.

The final dry thickness also depends on factors such as solid content, density, drying, and film formation. But controlling the wet thickness gives you a strong starting point for developing a reliable coating process.

⭐ 5× Higher Adhesion For Buccal Peptide Delivery Using infinityPV Slot-die Coater ⭐

Imagine taking a peptide drug without swallowing it or injecting it. Instead, a small film could be placed against the inside of the cheek, where it sticks to the moist tissue and gradually releases the drug.

This is the approach investigated in a new study from researchers at the DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Novo Nordisk, Universidade de Aveiro, and collaborating institutions.

The team developed a thin, two-layer film containing a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a type of peptide drug, together with a substance that helps the peptide pass through the tissue. One layer contains the drug and is designed to stick to the cheek, while the second layer acts as a backing layer to support the film and direct the release towards the tissue.

The researchers used slot-die coating to manufacture the films. By changing the chemical structure of the pullulan-based adhesive, the researchers changed the film's adhesion, swelling, cohesion, and release behavior.

⭐ Key Highlights ⭐
• 5× higher adhesion: The 3% MD formulation reached 102.6 ± 14.2 J/m², approximately five times the adhesion reported for conventional buccal films.
• More sustained release: 75.5 ± 14.6% of GLP-1-RA was released after 30 minutes from the 3% MD film, compared with 99.2 ± 1.6% from the 0% MD film.
• Two distinct layers: Slot-die coating was used to fabricate an active mucoadhesive layer and a cellulose-based backing layer.

It was a pleasure to welcome Katerina and Nathalia from Eurecat to our lab! 😃

During their visit, they had the opportunity to try slot-die coating on our Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater and received an introduction to our LBIC system for solar cell characterization.

Eurecat - Technology Centre is developing printed organic solar cells, electrolyzers and fuel cells and is exploring roll-to-roll solutions that bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial manufacturing.

The modular Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater platform is a great fit for this purpose, offering the flexibility to configure the system for a wide range of printed energy applications.

We enjoyed the inspiring discussions and look forward to future collaborations!

⭐ Bringing Slot-die Coating to Life at DTU Health Tech ⭐

We had a fantastic time visiting DTU Health Tech to explore how slot-die coating is helping shape the future of pharmaceutical and MedTech manufacturing.

After introducing the fundamentals of slot-die coating and its advantages for pharmaceutical applications, we rolled our Roll-to-Roll Coater into action for a live demonstration. You can see the slot-die coating process in action in the comments 👇

We were also happy to hear that DTU Health Tech's infinityPV slot-die coater is a well-used part of their laboratory. Even better, it has already been featured in research, including the recent preprint "Layer-by-Layer Polymeric Films: A Novel Approach to Buccal GLP-1 Delivery". In this work, the team used slot-die coating to fabricate multilayer polymeric films for controlled GLP-1 delivery, further demonstrating the potential of slot-die coating for advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing and next-generation drug delivery systems.

A big thank you to everyone at DTU Health Tech for the warm welcome, great discussions, and engaging questions. We're always inspired to see researchers pushing the boundaries of healthcare innovation.

☀️15.9% OPV Efficiency Validated with infinityPV Solar Simulator ☀️

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) offer a promising alternative to conventional solar technologies due to their lightweight, flexible, and cost-effective nature. However, their practical application has been limited by stability challenges.

Researchers from the Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark addressed this by employing magnetron sputtering to fabricate high-quality ZnO electron transport layers (ETLs), which reduce defects and enhance charge transport.

This approach achieved a record power conversion efficiency of 15.9% and maintained over 90% of the initial performance after 1,000 hours of continuous illumination. These results demonstrate the potential of sputtered ZnO ETLs for scalable, high-performance organic solar cells.

⭐ Key Highlights ⭐
• Achieved 15.9% efficiency in organic solar cells using sputtered ZnO ETLs
• Demonstrated
