⭐ 98% Accuracy In Perovskite Thickness Monitoring Using infinityPV R2R Coater ⭐

Perovskite solar cells hold immense promise for next-gen photovoltaics, but scaling up production while maintaining film uniformity has been a major hurdle. Traditional quality control methods like profilometry are destructive and impractical for real-time, large-scale manufacturing.

Researchers from the University of Antioquia and Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe have now developed a new in-line inspection system using an infinityPV Roll-to-Roll Coater combined with machine vision and AI.

This innovation enables real-time, non-destructive thickness monitoring of perovskite films with 98.5–98.6% accuracy, matching the precision of conventional profilometry.

☀️ Key Highlights ☀️
• Real-time, non-destructive thickness monitoring of perovskite films.
• 98.5–98.6% accuracy in predicting film thickness, comparable to traditional methods.
• Successfully tested in a continuous roll-to-roll production environment, proving scalability.
• Enables immediate adjustments to coating parameters for improved yield and reproducibility.
• A cost-effective, AI-driven alternative to destructive quality control methods.

Are you still spin coating? It might be time to upgrade. ✅⭐

Spin coating has long been the go-to method for early-stage coating research, and for good reason. It's simple, fast, and ideal for material screening and proof-of-concept work.

But when material costs, reproducibility, and scalability become important, slot-die coating offers significant advantages.

Why consider slot-die coating? 😎
• Virtually no material waste compared to spin coating
• Predictable wet film thickness based on process parameters
• Better reproducibility across operators and labs
• Easier transition from lab-scale development to industrial production
• Fully compatible with Roll-to-Roll manufacturing processes

You’re never going to guess what we coated today. No, seriously. 😅👀

While we often run coatings for potential clients to test whether foil, solution, and machine are a perfect match, this time we decided to run our own little experiment.

And for that… we tried coating sovsekulør (gravy browning). 😄

Science? Maybe.
Hungry? Definitely.

⭐ Freudenberg e-Power Systems Uses infinityPV R2R Coater for Precise GDE Fabrication in Fuel Cells ⭐

Low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (LT-PEMFCs) are a promising technology for clean energy applications. However, traditional manufacturing methods often face challenges related to scalability, cost, and efficiency.

In a recent study, Freudenberg e-Power Systems utilized an infinityPV Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater to fabricate gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) with high precision via slot-die coating. This enabled the subsequent implementation of Direct Membrane Deposition (DMD) using a knife blade coater, a scalable alternative to ink-jet or spray coating.

By optimizing ionomer dispersion formulations, the team achieved improved membrane formation, proton conductivity, and mass transport in LT-PEMFCs, paving the way for industrial-scale production.

☀️ Ready to Make Perovskite Solar Cells? Let's Prepare the Carrier Selective Layer 😎

In this episode of our series, you’ll learn:

How to define device architecture as either N–I–P or P–I–N.

How to select electron or hole selective transport layers depending on stack design.

And how different coating methods can be used for scalable deposition.

We demonstrate tin oxide (SnO₂) and zinc oxide (ZnO) as electron selective layers for N–I–P structures, both deposited by slot-die coating from nanoparticle dispersions.

For P–I–N structures, we show Avantama AG's nickel oxide (NiO), as a hole selective layer, coated from ethanol-based dispersions.

High-Quality Perovskite Solar Modules Produced Using Compact R2R Equipment ☀️ 💪

High-quality perovskite solar modules are moving closer to large-scale production thanks to advanced roll-to-roll coating technology. At Halocell Energy, this approach enables thin-film photovoltaic materials to be printed onto flexible substrates with strong scalability and cost advantages.

Using compact laboratory R2R equipment from infinityPV, Halocell Energy can replicate real production conditions at lab scale.

This allows teams to validate, refine, and optimize coating processes early — reducing development cycles, improving consistency, and lowering production costs. The result is a faster, lower-risk path from research to scalable manufacturing, with solar solutions that perform efficiently even in low-light and shaded environments.

“As Halocell, the compact laboratory R2R equipment from infinityPV has become essential for validating our roll-to-roll coating processes… This directly supports our goal of high-throughput, low-cost PV production by effectively bridging R&D to scalable manufacturing.” — Marion Geltinger, Chief Operations Officer, Halocell Energy

Reconnecting with the PV industry at SDU CAPE ☀️

Last week, we visited Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark to meet with the CAPE research center. With our background in solar, it was a great opportunity to catch up on the latest developments in the industry while reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new ones.

SDU CAPE is currently expanding their roll-to-roll (R2R) laboratory, and we brought our coating and characterization equipment to showcase what’s possible in a lab-scale R2R setup.

Their research in solar cells and photovoltaic (PV) systems is focused on developing mechanically flexible, lightweight, and ultra-thin solar cells using advanced thin-film technologies.

A key focus is scaling production through cost-effective R2R printing. An area close to our own expertise.

We look forward to staying connected and exploring future collaboration opportunities.
