Subsea cable infrastructure is facing growing demands for reliability, resilience, and real-time visibility. How can operators better understand what is happening beneath the seabed?

At the recent IEEE PES Insulated Conductors Committee (ICC) conference in Carlsbad, California, AP Sensing’s Michael Montgomery shared how Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) enables continuous Depth of Burial monitoring, helping operators identify potential cable exposure risks earlier and strengthen asset protection strategies for critical subsea infrastructure.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to exchange insights with industry experts, including AP Sensing colleagues Earl Curtis and Daniel Gerwig, and discuss the future of subsea cable monitoring technologies.

Since 2019, AP Sensing has supported forest landscape restoration in Mount Mulanje, Malawi, helping restore over 323 hectares and contributing to the growth of more than 414,000 trees.

This Earth Day, we are happy to expand our partnership with WeForest to support the Wof Washa project in Ethiopia, a vital Afromontane forest landscape in the Ethiopian highlands.
The project focuses on restoring degraded forest areas, strengthening community-led forest governance and protecting essential water resources.

As a global technology company, we recognise that long-term resilience depends on healthy natural systems. Supporting forest landscape restoration is one way we contribute to environmental responsibility beyond our own operations.

We look forward to continuing this journey.

At Asia Pacific Rail 2026 in Bangkok, AP Sensing will demonstrate how Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) helps rail operators detect track issues early, locate catenary faults, monitor natural hazards, and protect critical infrastructure. All without requiring additional trackside equipment.

📍 BITEC, Bangkok
📅 May 6–7

Meet our rail experts Dirk Uebe and James Wu at booth F28 to see how fiber optic sensing enables smarter railway monitoring.

20/04/2026

Detecting what you cannot see is a challenge everywhere. But for infrastructure systems such as railways, it becomes particularly critical.

In parts of Saudi Arabia, naturally occurring karst formations create hidden voids beneath the surface. Sinkholes can develop without warning and pose a real risk to rail operations, safety, and long-term asset integrity.

In this project, a freight rail section was monitored using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) to identify early signs of ground instability. By capturing continuous vibration data along the track, it became possible to detect subtle changes that indicate potential void formation before they turn into critical failures.

The result: Continuous monitoring without interrupting operations, improved safety, and a data-driven approach to managing geohazards.

Submarine power cable reliability remains a critical concern for the power sector, particularly when external interference threatens asset integrity.

How can utilities continuously monitor the depth of burial state and reduce this risk?

From 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟲 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟵, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, AP Sensing will be at 𝗜𝗘𝗘𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗦 𝗜𝗖𝗖 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗱, California at the Omni La Costa, where we will present our approach to 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗗𝗼𝗕𝗦, using Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) technology.

Building on real-world project experience, our presentation will show how fiber optic sensing enables:

✅Identification of exposed cable sections
✅Continuous temperature monitoring and hotspot detection
✅Data-driven maintenance planning to reduce outage risk

If you are attending, join our session to learn how DoBS strengthens offshore cable reliability and supports long-term asset protection.

A recent FOSA webinar took a closer look at what it means to scale fiber optic sensing across extraordinarily large assets.

Dr. Wissem Sfar Zaoui and Dr. Alex de Joode from AP Sensing, together with Dr. Paul Dickson from Smart Infrastructure Solutions, shared insights from the BRUA pipeline project.

The session explored how advanced technologies are shaping modern pipeline monitoring:

• AI-based signal analysis to enhance event classification
• Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for third party intrusion detection and reliable PIG tracking
• Fiber health monitoring along the asset
• Leak detection enabled through Distributed Temperature Gradient Sensing (DTGS)

Curious to hear how this works in practice? Below is a 2-minute highlight from the session.
