We had a wonderful workshop - thanks to great and creative participants! Designing your own tote bag workshop happened yesterday in at the super nice MV24 locations (perfect for workshops!). While tote bags can look boring or bland, when giving it some 'Zush' and your own artistic twist, it suddenly becomes your favorite bag!🤩

Tote bags are far more sustainable than plastics bags, but(!) only if they are used frequently, some estimations say around 50 times, other around 100+ times. That means: Use your tote bag as often as possible!

We need incentives and nudges to act sustainably - that is just how we humans work. Design is a powerful tool, so we used that to create unique tote bags.

Got inspired?

I can help you organize interactive workshops and family-friendly science events. Just write me!

A big thanks to the support behind the scenes for organizing that this workshops could happen: Ellen Loxley-Slåttsveen and Just.Store, and MV24 intern Carol! 🙌

Nature’s Design of the Week: SEAWEEDS 🌿🌊

Do you remember? We had a wonderful film screening and panel discussion event in December 2024 in Trondheim (Norway) about the fascinating world of oceans and blue forests with guests like Seaweed Solutions and marine biologist Jussi Evertsen.

Seaweeds are amazing and a very important part of ocean life! Soft, hard, wavy, and full of secrets, seaweeds sway with currents, produce oxygen and host marine life by creating underwater forests (blue forests!). They're so elegant and full of shapes, shades of green, brown, yellow and red.

🟢 Design features: flexibility, efficiency, resilience.

🔵 Environmental features:
✔ act as carbon sinks
✔ provide habitat
✔ grow fast without needing fertilizer or freshwater
✔ offer food and valuable resources for human use

🧠 Recently, designers and engineers are exploring seaweed-based materials for bio-based plastics, packaging, and even textiles. Stay tunes for the seaweed products we'll use in the future.

One of the global crises is environmental pollution and is a major component of it.
Since the 1950s plastic production exploded and is now over 400 million tonnes per year. But plastic is very durable and persistent and when it breaks down with age, microplastics pollute our earth - with severe consequences for all life on this planet.

Often invisible to our eyes microplastics are almost everywhere. Knowing where, why and how microplastics occur in different conditions helps us to fight this part of the pollution crisis.

☝️Plastic drinking bottles and plastic food packaging are problematic. Try to avoid it if you can.

- use reuseable / refill bottles
- drink from a glass

- benefit from natural food 'packaging' i.e., the peels and natural protection layers of our produce
- bring your own reuse bags to pack produce during groceries
- reusable wax papers are a great alternative

♻️ 30.3. is UN Zero Waste Day – can this be a shift in perspective? 🌍

Waste is not a fact - it’s a problematic point of view. One person’s waste is another’s resource. Nature itself has no waste, only cycles, where time and place define how something is included and converted in the natural ecosystem cycle. But we’ve manipulated and disturbed natural cycles so much that they no longer function as should. We have exceeded planetary boundaries and with that comes that we're altering the system and have limited solutions.

Today, the world generates over 2,3 billion tonnes of solid waste annually, predicted to 3,8 billion tonnes in 2030, and plastic pollution alone is a growing crisis. Yet, we often call our systems a circular economy... not because we’re there, but because we want to be.

What if we stopped seeing waste as 'waste' and started seeing it as a resource? This will automatically help us rethinking about what and how we use things, clever design and whether we may already have enough.

At SEEO, we work to tackle plastic pollution and rethink waste and think like nature does.

From the street where you live and walk every day, to the beach at your vacation, to the field where crops grow, the lake you adore, and even to the air we breathe - plastics, microplastics, nanoplastics.

--> Plastic pollution affects everyone, everywhere. And understanding it is the first step to action!

Are you wondering about plastic footprints, strategy and risk assessments, environmental impacts, or finding the right partners to implement environmental measures?

With SEEO, I am here to help and support you. I translate scientific knowledge into hands-on solutions so you and your organization can make informed decisions and take action for a better life on earth.

💡 Got any questions? I'm happy to talk to you 🙂

Sosial bærekraft! 🙌🌱
Today, we welcomed Skolelaboratoriet, NTNU with Jussi Evertsen and 7 teachers from all over Norway at Mellomveien 24 (Lademoen). This half day is all about social sustainability - concepts, discussions, acitivities and on-the-ground initiatives.

What means social sustainability for you?

You can contact us if you want workshops here, rent the room or have activities.👍

Cleanups are crucial. Every big piece of plastic removed prevents thousands of secondary microplastics from entering our environment.

At Hold Norge Rent’s gathering in Sandefjord (Feb 10-11, 2025), I (Cleo N. Stratmann) was invited to dive into this topic: “Microplastics – Understanding the Impact of Your Cleanup Efforts Across Land, Coast, and Sea.” Check the video clip.

The room was filled with people who are already making a difference. It’s exciting to see so many organizations leading the way, and I’m looking forward to continuing these conversations.

Also, a big thank you to Gromstad, Daniel Tjønn Thingvoll and Rønning, Lindvall Wendelboe for the great event organisation and hospitality - and the lovely coffee cup gift! ☕😊

Let's understand microplastics.
Microplastics are everywhere—on beaches, in the air, even in our food. You may have heard the term, but what exactly are microplastics?

💡Simply put, they are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm. Some are intentionally produced that way, like plastic pellets used in manufacturing. Others form when larger plastic items break down over time.

🔄From car tires and synthetic clothing to food packaging and balloons—plastics shed microplastics throughout their life cycle, from production to use, waste treatment, and environmental leakage. In the EU alone, between 0.7 and 1.8 million tonnes of microplastics enter the environment every year. That’s an enormous amount of tiny particles dispersing through air, water, and soil.

In 2023, a container spill off the Spanish coast released 25 tonnes of plastic pellets into the sea—an environmental disaster.

🧪Once in nature, microplastics are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to clean up. They persist, travel, and accumulate.

Why does this matter? Studies show that microplastics can be ingested by animals, sometimes leading to injury or death. Some plastics contain harmful chemicals, while others can pick up contaminants from their surroundings. In addition, small organisms can become entangled in microplastic fibers—just like larger animals in ghost nets.

Scientists are still investigating the full effects of microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics on human health. What we do know is that understanding microplastic pollution is the first step toward solutions. By identifying sources, pathways, and impacts, we can take meaningful action to reduce pollution at its root.

I work as an environmental engineer and researcher, focusing on microplastic pollution, data analysis, science communication, and practical solutions. If you’re tackling plastic challenges in your business, research, or community—let’s connect!
