SMALLHD – WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET

On set, the monitor is one of the most important tools for actually judging an image.

Focus, exposure, contrast, colour, skin tones — all of these are difficult to assess reliably if the image you're looking at isn't being displayed properly. Especially with changing lighting conditions or more complex camera setups, good monitoring can make a real difference.

What I personally expect from a monitor is fairly simple: it shouldn't get in the way. The tools need to be easy to access, the image needs to be reliable and consistent, and the monitor needs to simply work throughout the production day.

That's why SmallHD has become a familiar sight in professional camera and monitoring setups — mounted directly on the camera, at video village or wherever image evaluation is taking place.

Sony FX5 — a closer look at Sony’s new full-frame Cinema Line camera

The new Sony FX5 is an interesting addition to Sony’s Cinema Line. It combines a compact body with a full-frame stacked sensor and a set of features that should make it quite versatile on set.

Among the things that stand out are Open Gate recording, internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW, more than 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, and recording up to 4K 120p.

The camera also comes with Sony’s latest autofocus system with human pose estimation, three Base ISO settings — 800, 4000 and 12800 — and 5-axis image stabilization.

What I find particularly interesting is the overall concept: a relatively small camera that still offers quite a lot of the recording and imaging options you would normally look for in a larger cinema setup.
